This little ducky has no blue band. 🤔 A rare sight, but not an ugly duckling. 😬

Amber Ducky 🐥 (Cubaris sp.) is one of the most sought after species due to its bright yellow armor with one blue band. A pretty addition to one's bioactive collection.

Sorry for the poor quality. 😅 Video is shot through the side of the bin.

What do isopods eat? 🤔

Isopods are detritivores. This means that they eat decaying organic matter like dried leaves, dead wood, moss, etc. They also get calcium from eating dead insects and even calcium-rich stones.

Their eating habits make them ideal clean up crew for bioactive setups such as terrariums and vivariums as they eat up fallen dead leaves, leftover food, reptile shedding, and even animal wastes. This keeps the setups clean and reduces the growth of unwanted molds.

If you plan to keep isopods as pets, use substrate mixed with crushed dried leaves and calcium source. Also, make sure that there is always a supply of dried leaves on top of one side of the substrate. In this picture, you can see how beautiful the remnants of the acacia leaf that the isopods have just enjoyed munching on.

What are pillbugs and sowbugs? 🤔

Pillbugs and sowbugs are terrestrial isopods which are actually crustaceans, not insects. Unlike their shrimp and crab cousins, these creepy crawlies have adjusted to life on land, but need humidity so that they can breathe through their gills.

Pillbugs or rollie pollies like the Armadillo officinalis have the ability to roll into a ball to protect itself from threats. But they would more commonly run into hiding.

Sowbugs like the Porcellio laevis, on the other hand, do not have the ability to roll into balls. But, most sowbugs move much quicker than the pillbugs.
