🦠Mange: Know the Mites Behind the Disease!

Not all skin problems in your pets are the same. 😟🐕🐈
Mites that cause 'Mange' is a common parasitic skin disease caused by microscopic mites that affect dogs and cats skin, fur and overall health. 🩺🦠

Signs and symptoms vary on type of mites: 🐶🐱

Sarcoptes scabei
Causes sarcoptes mange (canine scabies)- highly contagious and intensely itchy/pruritic skin disease.
-burrow deep into the skin, leading to severe itching, redness, alopecia/hair loss and crust formation.

❗Zoonotic: can be transmitted to human, causing intensely pruritic and self-limiting skin lesions

Demodex canis
Causing demodectic mange (red mange).
-live on a healthy skin of dogs, but overgrowth can occur in puppies and immunocompromised dogs, results to hair loss and skin infections.

Cheyletiella spp
Known as "walking dandruff" because of visible flaky skin they produce.
-heavily infested dogs often show dandruff-like scaling and mild itching.

Otodectes cynotis
"Ear mite" usually found in ear canal of cat and dog but also can live on the skin surface. Highly contagious and animals become infested by direct contact with infested animal.
-dark appearance, waxy and crusty discharge from the ear.

Notoedres cati
"Feline mange", a highly contagious among cats and starts around ears and head.
-burrow in stratum corneum, causing inflammation, crusty/ scaly lesions and hair loss.

Transmission:
-Direct and indirect (less common) contact from infected animal

Common Signs to Watch:
-Excessive scratching/ pruritus
-Redness, irritated skin
-Hair loss/ Bald patches
-Scabs/ crusts
-Restlessness
-Bad odor

Diagnostics:

🔬Microscopic exam: Skin scraping, Ear swab, Tape impression

🚿Frequent grooming: Medicated shampoo (helps relieves itching/soothes skin)

⚠️LEPTOSPIROSIS: What Pet Parents Should Know 🐕

Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease found in soil and water- can affect dogs and human (Zoonotic). Bacteria spread through contact of infected rodent/wildlife urine. 🐀

HIGH RISK FACTORS:❗️
•Drinking water from urine-contaminated puddles, ponds, stagnant water or other wet environment 💧
•During heavy rainfalls/ flooding🌧️
•Contact with wildlife

WATCH FOR SIGNS: 🤒
•Fever/ Lethargy
•Vomiting/ Loss of appetite
•Increase thirst/urination

Severe cases:
•Kidney damage: Jaundice
•Liver Failure
Note: Some shows no signs of illness

ALLERGIC DERMATITIS: 😷
Caused by food, pollen, dust (environmental factors), flea dermatitis

SKIN INFECTIONS: 🦠
Bacterial infections- often secondary to another skin infections
Hot Spots- Red, moist, inflamed skin patches often caused by excessive licking, scratching, or biting

Yeast Infection- often occur in ears, paws, skin folds.

PARASITES:
Mange- Caused by microscopic mites (Sarcoptic or Demodectic)

DRY SKIN:
Occur due to weather, nutrition/diet, bathing habits/ hygiene.
