(PYOMETRA PATIENT) πΆπ§‘π
*Pyometra or Pyometritis*
is a uterine infection. Though it is most commonly known as a disease of the unaltered female dog, it is also a notable human disease. It is also seen in female cattle, horses, goats, sheep, swine, cats, rabbits, hamsters, ferrets, rats and guinea pigs.
*Pyometra*
is caused by hormonal changes and, most commonly, the bacteria E. coli that can ascend from the va**na into the uterus. This typically occurs during a dog's estrus (heat cycle) when the cervix is more relaxed. Often, a dog will develop a pyometra one to two months after their previous heat cycle.
*How is pyometra treated?*
The preferred treatment is to surgically remove the uterus and ovaries by performing an ovariohysterectomy (spay). Dogs diagnosed in the early stage of the disease are very good surgical candidates. The pyometra surgery is somewhat more complicated than a routine spay at this stage.
