The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) has achieved a groundbreaking milestone as the first rabies serology laboratory for canine testing in the Philippines to earn accreditation from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This recognition places RITM among an elite network of approved labs spanning 42 countries worldwide, bolstering the nationโs fight against rabies under the CDCโs One Health framework.
RITM took part in the CDCโs Rabies Serology Proficiency Program through the University of MissouriโColumbia and successfully met all required performance standards. The laboratory was later officially included in the CDCโs list of approved rabies serology laboratories, which was published on the CDC website (Approved Rabies Serology Laboratories for Testing Dogs) on January 16, 2026. In the previous year, RITM also passed the Proficiency Test for Rabies Serology conducted by ANSES โ Nancy Laboratory for Rabies and Wildlife, France, further affirming its capability to perform reliable rabies antibody testing.
Being a CDC-approved laboratory allows RITM to provide dependable canine rabies titer testing services to veterinary clinics, government programs, and research partners, addressing a critical gap in the Philippines. The ANSES proficiency recognition further aligns RITM with European standards, expanding opportunities for international collaboration and data sharing on rabies and other European Union Reference Laboratories (EURL) rabies mandates.
