β οΈ What is Dystocia?
Dystocia is when a mother dog or cat has difficulty giving birth. It is a medical emergency that can put both the mother and her babies at risk.
π Warning Signs
β Strong contractions for 20β30 minutes with no puppy or kitten delivered.
β More than 2 hours between babies while labor is still ongoing.
β A puppy or kitten is stuck in the birth canal.
β Green or bloody discharge appears before the first baby is born.
β Extreme weakness, collapse, severe pain, or excessive bleeding.
β Pregnancy has gone beyond the expected due date without labor.
π What Should You Do?

Stay calm and keep the mother in a quiet, clean, and comfortable area.

Observe the time between contractions and births.
β
Call or bring your pet to a veterinarian immediately if you notice any warning signs.

Transport her carefully in a well-ventilated carrier or box.

β Pull the puppy or kitten forcefully.
β Give human medicines or oxytocin without veterinary advice.
β Delay seeking veterinary care if labor is not progressing.

πΎ Schedule regular prenatal check-ups with your veterinarian.
πΎ Feed a balanced diet to keep the mother healthy.
πΎ Avoid breeding animals that are too young, too old, or have a history of difficult births.
πΎ Know the expected due date and prepare a clean, safe whelping/queening area.
πΎ Seek veterinary advice before breeding brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, as they have a higher risk of difficult labor.

Meet Mochi, a pregnant dog whose fur parents noticed that after she delivered her first puppy, several hours passed and no other puppies followed. Recognizing that something wasnβt right, they immediately contacted Vet ng Concepcion Animal Clinic .
Upon examination, Mochi was diagnosed with dystocia (difficult labor) and required an emergency Caesarean section. Thankfully, five more puppies were still safely inside her womb and were successfully delivered through surgery. Today, both Mochi and her five healthy puppies are doing well.
