UROLITHIASIS
Uroliths, also known as bladder stones, are rock-like mineral formations in the urinary bladder. They are relatively common in dogs, especially female dogs .
HOW DO UROLITHS FORM?
Uroliths form when minerals oversaturate in the urine, leading to crystal formation and stone development.
Several factors contribute to this are:
1.) Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Bacteria that produce urease, an enzyme that breaks down urea, cause excess ammonia production and make the urine alkaline, promoting struvite crystal formation .
2.) Urine pH Imbalance: An alkaline urine pH encourages the formation of struvite crystals .
3.) Diet: Inappropriate diets can affect urine acidity and mineral saturation, contributing to stone formation .
PREVENTION STRATEGIES:
To prevent recurrence, consider these strategies:
🔵Monitoring Urine Samples: Regularly check urine samples to detect and treat UTIs early.
🔵Dietary Changes: Use therapeutic diets to maintain acidic urine and control mineral levels.
🔵Increased Water Consumption: Encourage water intake to dilute urine and reduce mineral concentration.
