A male Labrador was presented with a history of chronic vomiting and progressive weight loss. Further diagnostic investigation with radiography and abdominal ultrasound helped identify an abnormal intestinal segment consistent with intussusception, a condition where one portion of the intestine telescopes into another.
๐ Why are X-ray & Ultrasound important?
๐ฉป X-ray can help identify abnormal intestinal distension, gas patterns, and other signs suggestive of gastrointestinal obstruction.
๐ฉบ Ultrasound allows us to directly evaluate the intestinal walls and motility. One important finding is the classic โtarget signโ concentric rings produced by the telescoped bowel segments, which can strongly support the diagnosis of intussusception.
๐จ WATCH OUT FOR THESE SIGNS:
โข Persistent or recurrent vomiting
โข Loss of appetite or decreased food intake
โข Progressive weight loss
โข Abdominal pain or discomfort
โข Lethargy or weakness
โข Diarrhea, sometimes with blood or mucus
โข Straining to defecate or reduced stool production
โข Abdominal distension
