Mandaluyong City totally bans the use of firecrackers

Mandaluyong City Mayor Menchie Abalos and the 27 barangay chairmen have decided to remove all firecracker zones, making the city firecracker-free for the coming New Year's Eve celebration.

The decision was unanimously made by Abalos and all barangay heads during their meeting with the Philippine National Police-Mandaluyong, the Bureau of Fire Protection-Mandaluyong (BFP) and other government agencies. The removal of firecracker zones in the whole city aims to discourage residents from using firecrackers.

Persons who will use firecrackers will be apprehended under City Ordinance No. 673, S-2017 (An Ordinance Regulating the Sale, Possession, Use, Disposal and Distribution of Firecrackers and Pyrotechnic Devices in the City of Mandaluyong and Providing for Violators Thereof).

The city government will deploy the full force of the police, BFP, emergency medical teams, barangay tanods and volunteers regarding the full implementation of the no firecracker-zones in Mandaluyong.

Instead of setting firecrackers, New Year revelers are allowed to use 'lusis' and other similar fireworks allowed by law within the vicinity of their homes.

The local government is encouraging residents to report to authorities those individuals who will use firecrackers and fi****ms during the New Year celebration.

The prevention of the use of firecrackers aims to reduce, if not eradicate, the number of victims of firecracker-related injuries.
