Common Eye Problems in Pets: What to Watch Out For!
Here at MandaVets Animal Clinic, we regularly treat a range of eye conditions in both dogs and cats. These are some of the most common cases we see:
Proptosis – A serious condition where the eye pops out of its socket, usually from trauma. This is an emergency — bring your pet in immediately!
Allergies – Red, itchy, and watery eyes can be due to allergies.
Viral infection - Red and watery eyes can be due to some viral infections too.
Corneal Ulcer – A scratch or injury on the surface of the eye. It can be painful and, if left untreated, may lead to permanent damage.
Glaucoma – Increased eye pressure that causes pain and may lead to blindness. Early signs include a cloudy or bulging eye.
Cataract – A clouding of the lens inside the eye, leading to blurry vision or blindness. This is more common in older pets and those with diabetes.
Eye Tumors – Growths in or around the eye may affect your pet’s vision and comfort. Early detection is key.
If your pet is squinting, has eye discharge, swelling, redness, or any changes in vision — don’t ignore it. Timely care can make all the difference!
