Raket sa Vargas goes green this April!
Join us at the UP Vargas Museum for days of art, music, food, coffee, and much more at Raket sa Vargas—an art bazaar happening on 19-20 March (Friday and Saturday) from 10:00am to 6:00pm. This month’s Raket sa Vargas features local raketirz who make and sell local, socially responsible, sustainable, repurposed or upcycled products. There will also be an open discussion Bakit tayo rumaraket?, on art and sustainability happening on Day 1, April 19 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm. Register to join, bit.ly/BakitMayRaketUPVM. The discussion revolves around alternative economies in the art world. We will also walk our raketirz through our exhibitions.
"Raket," a Filipino slang for side hustle or sideline, implies a quick gig to earn money. This colloquial connotation is evident in the art industry where it is commonplace to have jobs on the side to provide supplemental income; whether from selling merchandise or providing creative services in parallel to one's passion. The Vargas Museum, a not-for-profit public university institution, and the public programming of Raket sa Vargas recognizes the culture of side hustles among local artists and cultural workers and opens an opportunity for them to collectively share their works with the public.
Raket sa Vargas gathers various raketirz such as Plastics by Manila Automat, RA Abada, Isla Bodega Collective, Habilin Farms, Lost Hippie, Mimi Clothing MNL, Alpha Canine Bullies Feeds Production, Gerard Sulit, Karize Uy, Project Vapelight, Ari Vergara, and Tienda Wabas. Be serenaded with busking sessions in the afternoon on April 20. Food and drinks by Jane Dough Desserts, El Hermano Loco, Gedli Coffee, Kape Lakbay, Riotgrll, and Terra Bomba Kitchen are also available at the art bazaar.
Raket sa Vargas is a public program of the UP Vargas Museum. Write the [email protected] for details and related information. Walk-in visits are allowed. The museum is located inside the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus and is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays except holidays, 9:00am to 5:00pm. About the museum
The Jorge B. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center is a center for Philippine art and culture with research, curation, and education as its main thrusts.
The Museum is home to the collections of art, books, archives, memorabilia, coins, and stamps of Jorge B. Vargas, a significant political figure in twentieth-century Philippines and an alumnus of the UP. An avid collector with a vision of sharing Philippine art with future generations, Mr. Vargas donated the holdings he acquired across his illustrious career in public service, sports, and scouting to his alma mater in 1978. Since it opened its doors to the public in 1987, the institution has been visited by students, researchers, scholars, and the public. The museum has galleries for permanent as well as temporary exhibitions. The galleries are also spaces for educational events such as workshops, lectures, symposia, walkthroughs, and talks by artists and curators. The library accommodates researchers, scholars, students, and artists; it also hosts small exhibitions within its spaces.
