Roxithromycin is an antibiotic under the macrolide class used to treat a variety of bacterial infections such as those affecting the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and skin. It is a semi-synthetic derivative of the antibiotic erythromycin, and is structurally and pharmacologically related to other drugs in the same class, such as azithromycin and clarithromycin. As a macrolide, its primary role is to inhibit bacterial growth rather than kill the bacteria directly, making it particularly effective against Gram-negative bacteria
Macrolides like roxithromycin work by targeting bacterial protein synthesis, which is a vital process that bacteria need to survive and multiply. Specifically, roxithromycin binds to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, blocking the translocation step during protein chain elongation. This interruption halts bacterial protein production, effectively stopping bacterial growth and allowing the body’s immune system to clear the infection.
Common side effects of roxithromycin include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Less common effects may involve headache, skin rashes, changes in liver function, or altered taste and smell. Patients should complete the full course of treatment and consult their healthcare provider if side effects become severe or persistent.
