Sometimes, dogs twitch a little while sleeping — especially during dreams. 🐶💤

But repeated twitching, jaw chattering, paddling movements, or muscle jerking may sometimes be associated with neurologic conditions, including canine distemper.

Distemper does not always begin with severe symptoms right away. In some dogs, subtle neurologic signs can appear gradually and become more noticeable over time.

Here are signs that deserve closer attention:

• repeated or intense twitching
• chewing or jaw movements during rest
• stiffening of the body
• paddling movements while sleeping
• twitching even while awake
• weakness, coughing, nasal discharge, or loss of appetite together with twitching.

Young puppies and unvaccinated dogs are especially vulnerable to distemper and other serious infectious diseases.

Early recognition matters. 🤍

If your veterinarian suspects canine distemper or neurologic disease, referral and further evaluation may be recommended.
