During typhoons, the risk of leptospirosis increases significantly due to flooding, which can spread the bacteria Leptospira in contaminated water. This poses a danger to both humans and animals, especially pets. Here are some precautions pet owners should take to protect their pets from leptospirosis: avoid floodwaters, keep pet indoors, vacciate your pet against Leptospirosis, practice proper sanitation as this disease could infect us, humans too, allow pets and people drink clean water, and monitor pets closely for symptoms such as fever, weakness, poor appetite, diarrhea, vomiting as well as jaundice. Limit your pet’s exposure or access to flood waters and if you have to go outside wear protective gears.
Stay safe and warm, and please don’t leave pets outdoors or behind if you have to relocate!
