I became interested in the Chow Breed when I went to BGC (Bonifacio Global City - Taguig City) in 2011 to buy something. I saw this puffy and very huggable creature that was walking in the street with his owner. Back then, I was little bit of shy to ask what breed of dog was that and I was thinking that that breed were just for rich people. So I let them pass. The second time I went to the same place, I saw again a cream version of the dog I saw before. I told to myself, someday I want to have like that.
After a year, I purchased my first Chow puppy from a Pet Store in Pasay City, Philippines. Although my girl did not turn out to be the best specimen of a Chow, I quickly fell in love with this breed. It was then when I graduated in college when we started our journey. Her name is Cheeze and we are the only two living independently in our small apartment in Taguig City, Philippines. When my father died, I went home to my province and I brought Cheeze with me. My mom easily get hooked to the breed and loved Cheeze. Since then, Cheeze stayed in the province with my mom for 4 years as I sail to the ocean as a seafarer.
My second chow is Tomas. I had him when I disembark my vessel. Then the addiction to the breed begins. In 2016, I imported a cream boy from Russia followed by a Spanish cream girl and again, a Russian cream girl. Twenty seventeen came and I had a Spanish red boy in the summer and a Belarusian red boy in the fall. I learned so much from the breed and studied everything on my own. It made me bought some books from other country and asked my foreign breeders of my chows to teach me how to keep them in good health.
When I had my partner back (Justin), we started showing the chows, we always fail to get some points at first because we don’t know how to groom and handle perfectly. Months passed and we continuously join shows to learn until one night a seasoned breeder which also happens to be one of my closest friend called me. He said there is good male chow in a City downtown of Manila and the chow is up for rehoming. I immediately went there the next morning to see the chow. That was the first time I meet Gerald - the breeder. I was astonished with the way the chow moves and the chows temperament. After a while Gerald showed me the male chow’s son who walks majestically. Gerald told me to take the 2 chows with me back to Manila. To my interest, I set up the back seat of my car and carry the two beautiful chows. These chows were “Cash” and his son “Anton.”
Me and Justin showed Cash and on the third show we nailed the “BEST IN SPECIALTY SHOW”, “BEST PHILIPPINE BORN IN SHOW” and the “AWARD OF MERIT” from a foreign Spanish Chow Chow Expert Judge. Cash taught us how to show. We were so novice. Soon after CASH received his Grand Championship title we thought we should show him for the next title - the Hall of Fame. After 3 months, we had our cream girl from Loyd my friend, a seasoned breeder who also produces quality chows.
With Loyd’s girl, Carbo Stella Zhaklin at Lion Chows a.k.a. “Zhak” (from Russia) and our “Cash,” GUIMO was born together with one other male which is now owned by a town mayor in the Visayan Islands and 2 other females that is also making names on the dog show ring. GUIMO is a three-peat BEST BABY PUPPY IN SHOW under a Croatian, Australian and Filipino-Australian judges.
With those wins, we proved that the KING of our Kennel (“CASH”) produced the future star of his generation. Cash is passing his legacy to his future sons and daughters as he is already 6 years old today.
And finally, after years of waiting... The very 1st chow to bring our kennel name inside the ring was born. She is Your Highness Reigning Miss Universe a.k.a. “PIA.”
Pia’s first time in the ring made us so proud for winning the best baby puppy of the breed, the Group 1 and the BEST BABY PUPPY IN SHOW 2 🏆 under a Polish 🇵🇱 judge Mr. Andrzej Kazmierski at the 171st FCI All Breed Championship Dog Show. She is also the 🌸🌼💐Best Baby Puppy in Specialty Show for Group 5 Specialty under a Group Expert Judge Mr. Mitsunori Terada of Japan 🇯🇵
Your Highness Reigning Miss Universe is out of Nutlet Hard Djalo 🇧🇾 and A&L of The Island Crystal Crowned Lady of the Snow 🇪🇸
What we learned?
Show your chows to learn the standard of the breed not just by books or by stories of other people. Joining shows will open your eyes on how the chows should look, should behave, should move and should gait.
We found the Chow to be arrogant, dignified, loyal, proud and snobbish at times. In my opinion, they are a very misunderstood breed. They tend to go their own way in life, but are wholeheartedly devoted to the family. The Chow is not a barker, but a great watchdog. He will sound off at the sight of a stranger. They are normally not friendly with strange people. It is, however, essential that the Chow be socialized as a young puppy. The Chow is a very clean breed and easy to housebreak. Their coat does require at least a once a week brushout. It is essential to keep the coat in good condition.
