Meet "ALLIGATOR"
Alligators are closely related to crocodiles, caimans and gharials. Together these animals constitute one of the oldest families of reptiles. They have changed remarkably little since the time - 65 million years ago - when they shared the earth with dinosaurs.

Meet "ANACONDAS"
These large snakes, also known as water boas, live a semi-aquatic existence, mainly in the rainforest of South America. Anacondas are closely related to pythons, which are more widely distributed over the world. Both anacondas and pythons kill their prey by constriction and generally considered to be fairly primitive snakes. Female anacondas are viviparous; they give birth to as many as 75 live young.
There are two species of anaconda in the family Boidae - The Yellow Anaconda and the Giant Anaconda (Eunectes Murinus). The Giant Anaconda is the world's largest snake. It can reach 9m (30 feet) and weigh 250kg (550 lb). Despite its size, the snake remains remarkably agile by spending much time in water, where its body weight is supported. It lies in wait for passing prey, such as pigs, jaguars or caimans, and then wrapping its body around the struggling prey, tightening its coils every time its victim exhalles. Eventually the prey is suffocated to death and is consumed head-first and whole.

Anacondas may venture into trees along the riverbank in search of birds to eat.

One meal may sustain an anaconda for weeks or even a month, depending on the size of the victim.

Meet "AGOUTIS"
Agoutis are large rodents from Central and South America. They are adapted for running through undergrowth and have a form somewhat like a small deer or hare, with hoof-like claws. they can also swim very well. There are many species and sub-species over its range. They feed on all manner of vegetation and escape into burrows whenever danger threatens. As Agoutis live in the equatorial zone of the Americas they are not subjected to significant seasonal changes in climate. The result is that they can breed all year round and quickly establish large population, becoming serious pests.

Meet "AGAMAS"
The 'Agamas' are a group of approximately 60 species of primitive lizard that are found in Asia, Australia and Africa. They are closely related to iguanids and chameleons and occupy similar habitats. Like most reptiles, they are predators and feed mainly on insects, often inhabiting rocky, desert regions. Agamas are 30-40 cm (12-20 inc.) long. They are usually brown or grey but, like the iguanids and chameleons, they are able to change colour. During the mating season male agamas may turn bright red or blue and those of some species have crests that are used in courtship display.

Meet "ADDERS"
The name 'adders' is applied to several snakes from the viper family, including the common viper (Vipera Berus) and puff adders. like other vipers, adders are considered highly evolved snakes. They usually have stocky bodies which are relatively well-adapted to deal with cool temperatures. then common Viper is found in Asia and Europe but its habitat extends as far as north as Norway. Adders have long, hinged fangs in their upper jaws and are venomous. Adders venom is usually slow-acting. It works by causing internal haemorrhaging. the bite of some adders, especially puff adders and death adders, is dangerous to human.

Meet ''AARDWOLVES"
Like aardvarks, these animals have an afrikaans name - this time meaning 'earth wolf'. Although member of the order of carnivores, aardwolves are actually members of the hyena family and not the canine family. they have the front-heavy build of the hyenas, but they are far less robust. whereas true hyenas hunt and scavenger large prey, aardwolves specialize in far smaller prey. They will take small animals and carrion, but their staple diet is termites, hence their name, for they burrow into termite mounds to find the insects. they also burrow out their own earth, rather like badgers do.

Meet "AARDVARKS"
These creatures are rather curious, looking like an assemblage of parts from other animals - the body of a badger, the ears of a donkey and the nose of a pig. in fact, the name 'aardvark' is Afrikaans for 'earth pig', but aardvarks are not related. they have their own order and family with just one species - orycterops afer.

Aardvarks are nocturnal animals of the African continent. They live on ants and termites, which they find by burrowing into their nests. the mouth is nothing more than a small opening through which a slender, sticky tongue is slid back and forth.
