Ringo has been our official “greeter” since we first opened our doors on April 1, 2022. Some of our regular clients grew concerned when they noticed his terrarium was missing from its usual spot in the waiting area. Don’t worry—he was just away for a well-deserved home makeover! The good news is he’s back, and he’s proudly showing off the newly renovated terrarium, courtesy of Dr. Leo.

Yesterday, I wasn't supposed to be on duty at New Alabang Veterinary Center, but I had to be there to operate on a patient. By chance, after my procedure, I met a Chihuahua named Lucky. His pet parents said they were happy to meet me and share with me Lucky’s story. I'm glad they did.

According to them, Lucky had an accident 12 years ago. His accident resulted in a fractured left hind leg. He was brought to several clinics, but they said they wouldn’t be able to repair the damaged leg. His pet parents were frantic and still clinging on to hope that his leg would be saved, until finally, they were referred to an unassuming clinic tucked in a small village in Paranaque. There they met the late Dr. Perry. They didn’t expect to be referred to a place like this because they’ve been to bigger veterinary clinics and hospitals to find a vet who can help Lucky.

Dr. Perry reassured them that Lucky will be alright. He skillfully repaired the fractured leg. After several follow ups and post-op care, Lucky was able to regain the use of his leg and his pet parents couldn’t be happier. Fast forward to 2025, Lucky is now geriatric. His care is now the responsibility of Dr. Perry’s daughter in law, Dr. Stephanie. His operated leg is still functioning well.

Lucky is a testament to what a vet is worth. We’re stewards of the human – animal bond. We promote the quality of life, not just of pets, but also the lives of those who consider them as family. It’s a responsibility that we do not take lightly.

Today, Aug. 1, 2025, would have been Dr. Perry’s 66th birthday. While it has been 12 years since his untimely passing, his legacy endures through the patients that he has taken care of, their pet parents that he comforted, and the veterinarians that he has inspired.

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if he was still around. I wonder what he would say about the clinics my partners and I built. I hope wherever he is, he is proud of the work that we do. Happy birthday in heaven, Dr. P.O. Peralta.

-Dr. Carlo

Meet Fabio, New Alabang Veterinary Center's resident pigeon. He was rescued by the Southbend Building's security guard after he got shot. He was treated by our avian vet, Dr. Leo, and was adopted by Dr. Stephanie after he got better. Today he spends his time pacing the clinic halls, flapping his wings and chirping loudly whenever he feels hungry.

Don't forget to say hello to Fabio next time you drop by! More importantly, don't forget to bring him bird seeds!

Lakan, a male tiger cub, was referred to New Alabang Veterinary Center’s exotic vet, Dr. Leo Almelor last February 2025. He was brought into our practice due to a fractured right humerus and femur caused by a bad fall. He was also previously diagnosed with metabolic bone disease which made his bones weak and fragile. NAVC’s Dr. Leo and Dr. Stephanie Peralta reached out to our orthopedic surgery mentor and good friend, Dr. Aris Hapatinga of Santa Ana Animal Health Clinic to discuss the possibility of operating Lakan. After careful assessment, they all agreed that it would be a challenging, yet doable procedure.

A combination of intramedullary pin and bone plating was done to repair and stabilize his femoral fracture, while his fractured humerus was repaired using several intramedullary pins. The surgery proved to be quite difficult, and it took several hours to finish. Dr. Aris, Dr. Leo, Dr. Stephanie and the rest of the NAVC team breathed a collective sigh of relief as the last stitch was made to close the incision. While everyone was happy that the surgery ended smoothly, the team knew that it was also the start of another challenge: rehabilitation of a tiger cub post-orthopedic surgery.

Everything that could help Lakan’s rehabilitation were done by the NAVC team. Physical exercises, laser therapy and adequate nutrition were just some of the things that Dr. Leo recommended for him. It also helped that Lakan had a very supportive family. They followed through with all the recommendations and everyone in their household was committed to his recovery. Even his “sister”, Likha the lioness, got into action. Every playtime Lakan spent with her gave him the right amount of exercise, strengthening his legs.

Months went by and Lakan kept getting bigger and stronger. He was starting to outgrow his bone plate. Dr. Leo kept in contact with Dr. Aris, and eventually, they both decided it was time to remove the bone plate on his femur. Lakan underwent another surgical procedure to have this done. After a few days of confinement at NAVC, he was discharged and recovering well at home with his family. We couldn’t be any happier.

Lakan’s case is one of the most challenging that we have encountered here at NAVC. We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Aris Hapatinga for sharing his expertise in veterinary orthopedics. Through collaboration of veterinary professionals, we have been able to save another patient’s life. We will always try our best to treat all creatures great and small. Sometimes we wonder, after this tiger, what’s the next patient that will come through our door?

Our very own exotic pet vet Dr. Leo Almelor was among the speakers during The Veterinary Practice Forum organized by last Apr. 8, 2025 at the SM Aura SMX Convention Center. His topic, "Exploring The Exotics: A Guide To Ethical Specimen Collection", aims to share to the attendees the correct and proper way of collecting laboratory samples from reptiles, birds and small mammals.

The recent wave of interest in exotic pet ownership necessitates the need for fellow veterinarians to be able to handle, diagnose and treat exotic pets. With Dr. Leo's lecture and live demonstration of his techniques, we're sure the conference's attendees will be able to confidently and safely obtain laboratory samples from whatever kind of patient that will come their way.

and I just concluded Module III of the Certified Companion Animal Therapist (CCAT) Program of North Carolina State University. Together with the rest of our batch mates, we spent 4 days in Tanauan, Batangas learning about the nuances of animal therapy. From devices such as the shockwave machine, ultrasound and therapeutic lasers, to manual manipulation which involves stretching and various types of massages, our mentors and David Levine took us under their wing and made sure we got our questions answered. We had the best classmates we could ask for. It felt like we were back in college. We even had a cafeteria and dorm room!

Next up is our externship, case reports and final examination. We hope to be able to finish all these by 2026. It will take a lot of time and effort since the externship will be abroad. It will all be worth it for sure. The big plan is to open a pet rehabilitation center soon. This will allow us to better manage our post-op and neuro patients.

I am proud of my veterinary colleagues who are in this journey with us in the service of the Filipino pet community. We're all excited for what the Philippine animal therapy landscape will look like.
