So this is the result...

Our patient Scarlet was brought to the clinic with sever lethargy, loss of appetie, va**nal discharge, and distended abdomen.. after x-ray and CBC scarlet was diagnosed with pyometra to wit;

Pyometra is a serious infection of the uterus in unspayed female dogs that can be life-threatening. It occurs when the uterus fills with pus due to bacterial infection, most commonly E. coli

Causes

- Hormonal Changes: Pyometra is driven by hormonal changes, typically occurring one to three months after a dog's heat cycle. These hormonal shifts increase the risk of bacterial infection in the uterus
- Bacterial Infection: Bacteria, often from the va**na or intestines, can enter the uterus and cause infection. Progesterone can promote mucus secretion and close the cervix, fostering bacterial growth


Types of Pyometra

- Open Pyometra: The cervix is open, resulting in visible pus or blood discharged
- Closed Pyometra: The cervix is closed, so there is no discharge, making it more difficult to detect and more dangerous due to the risk of uterine rupture[

Diagnosis

A vet will typically perform several diagnostic tests :

- Physical examination and history review
- Complete blood count and general chemistry profile
- Urinalysis
- Abdominal radiographs and ultrasounds
- Vaginal cytology

Treatment

- Surgery: The primary treatment is an emergency spay (ovariohysterectomy) to remove the infected uterus and ovaries.

After almost a week from urgery, scarlet is now going home.
