Treatment for FLUTD depends on the root cause of the condition. For example, if your cat gets a bacterial UTI, they will require antibiotics to treat the infection.
The treatment for urinary stones varies depending on the type. Struvite stones are often treated with a prescription diet that dissolves the stones, whereas calcium oxalate stones are frequently removed surgically. If struvite stones do not dissolve on their own by diet, surgery may be necessary.
Cats with urethral obstructions require prompt emergency surgery to remove the blockage. During surgery, the veterinarian threads a catheter up the urethra and flushes it with sterile saline.
A blocked urethra might take a long time to recover, perhaps requiring hospitalization for many days or weeks. If your cat develops a urethral obstruction, they will be treated with intravenous fluids and pain medication.
