A study by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Nuclear Research Institute found that around 80% of honey products sold in Philippine groceries, souvenir shops, and online marketplaces were not pure honey. Using advanced stable carbon isotope ratio analysis, researchers discovered that many products contained syrups derived from sugarcane and corn instead of authentic bee-produced honey. The technique can distinguish genuine honey from adulterated products by analyzing the unique carbon isotope "fingerprints" of their ingredients.

The study revealed that 62 out of 76 adulterated honey brands were composed of approximately 95% C4 sugar syrup, meaning some products contained very little or no genuine honey at all. Researchers also found that 75% of local honey brands sold in groceries and souvenir shops and 87% of locally sold online honey products were adulterated. In contrast, none of the 41 imported honey products examined in the study were found to be adulterated.

According to DOST-PNRI researchers, honey adulteration is more than just misleading labeling. Authentic honey contains naturally occurring enzymes, antioxidants, and antimicrobial compounds that contribute to its nutritional value and health benefits. Replacing honey with inexpensive sugar syrup not only deceives consumers but also places legitimate Filipino beekeepers at a competitive disadvantage. The researchers estimate that honey fraud causes the local honey industry to lose hundreds of millions of pesos annually, reducing income for honest producers while allowing counterfeit products to dominate the market.

The researchers have called for stronger food authentication standards, stricter enforcement of honey labeling regulations, and wider adoption of isotope-based testing to protect consumers and support the country's legitimate beekeeping industry. They also emphasized that laboratory-based authentication remains the most reliable method for verifying honey purity, as many popular home "purity tests" are not scientifically reliable.

: Agriculture in cities is becoming more common in response to achieving food self-sufficiency. Data suggests that 15 to 20 percent of the global food is already produced in cities.

A recent study found that cucumbers, tubers, lettuces, and other crops that are grown in urban settings yield two to four times higher than their conventionally grown counterparts.
