OSLO’S JOURNEY: FROM INJURY TO RECOVERY 🐾

Meet Oslo, a brave 3-year-old male Belgian Malinois who visited Vet District Animal Medical Center – General Trias last August 3 for an emergency check-up and wound stitching.

Oslo came in with a complete laceration of his left pinna (ear), requiring immediate veterinary attention. Under the care of our veterinary team, led by Dr. Makris, the wound was carefully assessed and emergency stitching was performed to help bring the separated parts of the ear together, protect the affected area, and support proper healing.

Every emergency case is different, and prompt veterinary care can make an important difference in your pet’s recovery. If your furbaby experiences an injury or wound, don’t wait—have it assessed by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

One of our adorable patients recently visited Vet District Animal Medical Center Inc. – General Trias due to noticeable skin lesions on the face, accompanied by hair loss and irritation.

After a thorough examination, Dr. Makris performed a skin scraping test to determine the cause of the skin problem. Under the microscope, the culprit was revealed... 🔬

What is Demodex?
Demodex mites are tiny, microscopic parasites that naturally live in the hair follicles and oil glands of dogs. In small numbers, they usually do not cause any problems. However, when they multiply excessively, they can lead to demodectic mange (demodicosis), resulting in hair loss, redness, scaling, crusts, and skin infections.

How do dogs get Demodex?
Unlike many other mites, Demodex is not usually contagious. Puppies commonly acquire these mites from their mother during the first few days after birth through close contact while nursing.

The disease develops when a dog's immune system is unable to keep the mites under control. This is more common in:
🐾 Young puppies with developing immune systems
🐾 Senior dogs
🐾 Dogs with weakened immunity due to illness, stress, poor nutrition, or certain medications

How can you help prevent Demodex outbreaks?
✅ Feed a balanced, nutritious diet to support a healthy immune system.
✅ Keep up with regular veterinary check-ups.
✅ Practice good skin and coat hygiene.
✅ Minimize stress and treat underlying illnesses promptly.
✅ Avoid self-medicating skin problems, as incorrect treatment may worsen the condition.

If your pet develops persistent hair loss, redness, crusting, or itchy skin, don't wait.

Bring your pet to your veterinarian for a proper examination. A simple skin scraping can confirm the diagnosis, allowing your veterinarian to prescribe the appropriate treatment. Early detection helps prevent the condition from becoming more severe and reduces the risk of secondary skin infections.

Cobie’s Road to Recovery!

We’re happy to share a positive update on Cobie, a 6-year-old Shih Tzu who recently underwent aural hematoma surgery at Vet District Animal Medical Center Inc. – General Trias Branch last June 18, 2026.

Following his procedure, Cobie has been showing excellent progress with a good appetite, normal activity levels, and healthy healing of his surgical site. Through proper post-operative care, regular monitoring, and wound management, the swelling in his affected ear has significantly decreased, and his recovery continues to move in the right direction.

Aural hematoma occurs when blood collects between the skin and cartilage of the ear flap, often causing pain, swelling, and discomfort. Early veterinary intervention is important to prevent complications and ensure proper healing.
