Shakur Stevenson defeated Oscar Valdez by unanimous decision on April 30, 2022, to become the unified WBC, WBO, and Ring Magazine Junior Lightweight Champion.
The highly anticipated unification bout took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Oleksandr Gvozdyk defeated Adonis Stevenson via an 11th-round knockout on December 1, 2018, at the Centre Vidéotron in Quebec City, Canada. The victory dethroned Stevenson, ending his five-and-a-half-year reign as the WBC and lineal light heavyweight champion.

The bout pitted long-reigning champion Adonis "Superman" Stevenson against the undefeated mandatory challenger, Ukrainian Olympic bronze medalist Oleksandr "The Nail" Gvozdyk.

Guided by veteran trainer Teddy Atlas, Gvozdyk employed a disciplined, high-volume boxing strategy. He utilized constant movement to avoid Stevenson's devastating left hand. Stevenson found success in the middle rounds with heavy body shots, keeping the fight highly competitive.

In the 11th round, Gvozdyk landed a massive straight right hand that severely dazed Stevenson. Capitalizing on the moment, Gvozdyk trapped the champion in the corner and unleashed a fierce 10-punch combination.
