Why crossbreed?
Each breed has its own traits. Crossbreeding allows a farmer to blend them.
So here is a female piglet, mom is Duroc and dad is a Yorkshire (Large White).
We intend to grow her to be a sow. Duroc pigs are known for fast growth, good food efficiency, and high quality meat however they also have aggressive tendencies and poor mothering abilities so we need to crossbreed with a Large White with excellent mothering capabilities and larger litters.
Now, we have a piglet that will become a good quality sow. 🐷 Best of both worlds, eh?
