TAKING A DOMESTIC FLIGHT WITH YOUR PET IN THE PHILIPPINES?
Planning to bring your dog or cat in the cabin on a Philippine Airlines domestic flight? Here’s a simple step-by-step guide you can save for reference.
1. Get a Veterinary Health Certificate (VHC)
Have your pet checked by a licensed veterinarian. Bring your pet’s records showing its name, breed, s*x, age, identifying marks, and your contact details. If your pet is healthy and free from signs of disease and external parasites, the vet can issue a VHC.
The VHC is valid for 3 days, so plan accordingly.
2. Make sure the rabies vaccination is updated
Your pet must have a valid rabies vaccination. If it’s the first rabies vaccine, you generally need to wait 14 days before travel. The vaccination record will be checked when getting the VHC. A rabies vaccine is generally valid for 1 year.
3. Get a Shipping Permit
Once you have the VHC and updated rabies vaccination record, apply for a shipping permit through the BAI National Veterinary Quarantine Services (https://nvqsd.bai.gov.ph/) or your local Veterinary Quarantine Station.
The digital permit is usually sent to your registered email and is valid for 7 days.
4. Book your FurPAL
After booking your flight, add FurPAL through the Travel Boost option to include your pet in the cabin. The combined weight of your pet and carrier should not exceed 10 kg.
Fee: ₱2,500 per flight
5. Accomplish the FurPAL Declaration, Release, and Waiver Form
You can download the form beforehand or accomplish it at the airport.
6. Prepare your pet’s travel essentials
Soft-sided pet carrier (maximum 17 × 11 × 9.5 inches)
Potty pads/diapers
Plastic bags for waste disposal
Empty water bottle
Dog muzzle and leash
PRO TIPS:
1. Your pet should be able to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably inside the carrier.
2. Get your pet used to the carrier at least 1 week before travel. Start with short periods inside, then gradually introduce car rides and longer periods.
3. Let your pet pee/poop before check-in, but avoid strenuous exercise right before boarding.
4. Avoid giving your pet a large meal immediately before the flight.
5. Take extra care when traveling with brachycephalic breeds, senior or obese pets, or pets with heart/respiratory conditions.
6. Keep your pet inside the carrier throughout the cabin experience. In this case, make sure that your pet is used to being inside the carrier.
VERY IMPORTANT:
If you fly with your pet from Zamboanga to Cebu, then return to Zamboanga two days later, you need to secure a new VHC and Shipping Permit from Cebu, even if your previous Shipping Permit is still valid.
Hope this helps fellow fur parents!
