In the harsh wilderness of De Doorns, South Africa, a 7-week-old puppy named Gunnar was left behind after his family had already been rescued.

For an entire week, he survived alone with nothing but a piece of bread almost as big as himself to keep him alive. Cold, sick, and desperately malnourished, Gunnar faced infections, parasites, and severe anemia, yet somehow never lost his will to trust or love.

When the rescue team from Sidewalk Specials finally found him, they witnessed a small miracle: Gunnar, weak but wagging, tried to offer them his precious bread. That gesture said everything about his spirit he was not only fighting to survive, but still hoping to share what little he had.

Urgent veterinary care and a nurturing foster home helped Gunnar recover. Soon, he found a forever family with Freya, a woman who instantly recognized his worth and resilience. Today, Gunnar is a joyful, healthy dog known for collecting rocks and never stopping his happy tail wags.

Gunnar’s journey from abandonment to belonging is a beautiful testament to how even the smallest act of compassion on both sides can transform a life. Sometimes, all it takes is one moment of shared kindness to turn survival into home.

A 5-month-old puppy saved 67 people from a devastating landslide in India.
This is Rocky. In the early hours of June 30th, he was sleeping on the ground floor of his home in Siyathi village as torrential rains poured down outside.
Rocky woke up, began barking, and got the attention of his human, Lalit Kumar. "I was woken by my dog’s strange barking, as if he was trying to warn me. When I reached him, I saw a huge crack in the wall and water pouring in,” Kumar said.
Thanks to Rocky's early warning, Kumar was able to wake up the others in the village, encouraging 22 families to evacuate to safety. Soon after, nearly a dozen houses were flattened as a landslide struck the village.
Despite being carried by owner, Rocky was caught in the wave of rushing water. The poor pup was swept away by the floodwaters but was thankfully found the next day, exhausted and stuck in nearby bushes 2–3 km away, and later rescued.
Rocky has only been with Kumar for three months, but he's already an extremely valued member of his community, having helped save the lives of all of his neighbors.

The Davao City Veterinarian’s Office (CVO) continues to bring its services closer to Dabawenyos through its district offices and in coordination with the barangays around the city as part of its rabies control and animal husbandry disease prevention and control programs.

The CVO will have barangay visits to conduct free castration and anti-rabies vaccination activities, as well as Veterinary Integrated Barangay Extension Services (VIBES) to several barangays in the month of May.

On May 10, the CVO will conduct free anti-rabies vaccination activity at the gymnasiums or chapels in Lanzona Subdivision, Poly Subdivision, Cristina Village, Victoria Village, Alpha Homes Phase 1 and Phase 2, Del Carmen, Seaside 2, RPJ Village, Shanghai Village, San Isidro Village, Matina Executive Homes, and Punta Dumalag from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

Personnel from the CVO will also be in Barangays Callawa and Tawan-Tawan on May 19 to offer free anti-rabies vaccination to cats and dogs, while on May 21 they will be in Barangays Callawa and Baguio Proper to offer the same.

On May 22, CVO personnel will be providing free anti-rabies vaccination in Barangays Gatungan, Callawa, and Tambobong; and in Barangays Gatungan and Barangay Wines on May 23.

The CVO personnel will be in Barangay Acacia on May 26, Barangays Sirawan and Acacia on May 27, in Barangays Malagos and Acacia on May 28, Barangay Carmen on May 29, and Barangay Cadalian on May 30 to offer free anti-rabies vaccination.

Interested Dabawenyos may visit the nearest gymnasium or chapel in the aforementioned areas to avail of the free anti-rabies vaccination services.

The CVO will also be in Barangay Panacan on May 14, Barangay Cabantian on May 16, and
Barangay Lizada on May 29 for their free castration services.

Meanwhile, livestock owners in Barangay Tigatto may avail of CVO’s VIBES program on May 19, and in Bago Aplaya on May 26.

Dr. Gay Pallar, CVO's Acting Assistant Department Head, said that these schedules are still subject to change under certain circumstances.

VIBES and synchronization activities will also be conducted in Barangay Malabog on May 30.

The VIBES program is a combination of veterinary services that include pregnancy diagnosis in female large animals, deworming livestock and poultry, consultation and treatment, artificial insemination, synchronization and vitamin supplementation.

Hemosep vaccination and hog cholera vaccination is also offered during VIBES as well as anti-rabies vaccination.
