This 10-year-old intact mixed-breed dog was rushed to our clinic presenting with anorexia and lethargy, signs that may seem mild at first, but can indicate a life-threatening condition in unspayed female dogs.
Upon evaluation, the patient was diagnosed with pyometra, a serious uterine infection caused by hormonal changes after heat cycles. In pyometra, the uterus fills with pus, leading to systemic infection (sepsis) if not treated promptly.
โ ๏ธ Without immediate intervention, pyometra can be fatal.
During surgery, the infected uterus and ovaries removed weighed approximately 1 kilogram, a stark reminder of how severe and advanced this condition can become when left untreated.
Management & Treatment
โ๏ธ Emergency surgery (ovariohysterectomy) to remove the infected reproductive organs
โ๏ธ Aggressive supportive care including IV fluids, antibiotics, and pain management
โ๏ธ Close post-operative monitoring, especially critical for senior patients
Despite it being a holiday, this case was treated as an emergency. The Faithful Pets team responded immediately, because when a life is on the line, care cannot wait. The surgery was successful, and the patient is currently under close post-operative monitoring.
