When “More Insulin” Isn’t the Answer: Finding the Right Balance in Diabetes
This senior dog came to AVCI with classic signs of diabetes: increased appetite, excessive drinking and urination, and progressive muscle loss.
Starting insulin was only the beginning. Diabetes treatment often requires time, repeated monitoring, and careful dose adjustments because every patient responds differently.
At one point, the blood glucose dropped to 52 mg/dL, showing that the insulin was working—but that particular dose was already too much. One glucose reading alone does not tell the whole story; we also look at the patient’s overall response at home.
For some diabetic patients, getting there takes weeks of monitoring and adjustment. It is a process shared by the veterinary team and the pet parent—carefully understanding the individual patient and making changes based on how that patient actually responds.
With the pet parent’s patience, close observation, and cooperation throughout several weeks of monitoring, a more suitable regimen was eventually found.
🐾 Less excessive urination
🐾 Better body condition
🐾 Gaining weight again
🐾 Better control of diabetic signs
Managing diabetes is not about lowering glucose as much as possible. It is about finding the right balance for each individual patient.
If your dog is drinking or urinating more than usual, losing weight despite a good appetite, or has already been diagnosed with diabetes, proper veterinary assessment and continued monitoring can make a big difference. Visit any AVCI branch for evaluation and diabetes management.
