A little transparency from my side as a Ball Python breeder. 🐍
I recently produced a clutch from a pairing I believed was Blackhead Yellowbelly DH Hypo Pied × Hypo Puzzle. Now that the babies are out of the eggs and I’ve had the chance to evaluate the entire clutch, I can confidently say I don’t believe there’s any Blackhead present.
At this point, I think the Female may simply be a Dark Yellowbelly, or perhaps the Red/Ringer influence is what’s creating the darker appearance that led me to believe Blackhead was in the mix. Will have to find out. 🤔
I wanted to share this because it proves one thing: this doesn’t just happen to customers, it happens to us breeders with our own pairings too.
As buyers, you have every right to research the genetics, inspect the animal’s weight and condition upon arrival, and question anything that doesn’t add up.
That’s simply part of due diligence, just as it’s our responsibility as breeders to identify every animal to the best of our knowledge and be accountable when an honest mistake is made.
At the same time, I hope this gives a little perspective from the breeder’s side. Reputable breeders aren’t trying to mislead anyone; we are doing our best to accurately identify every animal, including our own holdbacks and future projects. Honest mistakes can happen, and what truly matters is how the breeder responds when they do.
If you ever find yourself in this situation, I hope you’ll remember that we’re human too. Please approach the conversation with fairness and understanding, and allow the breeder the opportunity to make things right in a reasonable way.
That’s why I always say your best investment is not just the snake, but more importantly the breeder behind it. Choose someone with integrity, someone who communicates honestly, someone who stands behind what they produce, and someone who will only send out healthy animals while always putting the welfare of both the animals and the person receiving them first.
No one can change the genetics after the fact, but a good breeder will always do their best to make things right moving forward.
