4 human foods that are unsafe for cats:

1. Onions and Garlic

Why it's dangerous: These contain compounds called thiosulfates, which can damage cats’ red blood cells and lead to hemolytic anemia. This includes all forms—raw, cooked, powdered, or dehydrated.

Symptoms of poisoning: Lethargy, weakness, reduced appetite, pale gums, and reddish urine.

How little is too much?: Even small amounts over time can be harmful, especially in concentrated forms like garlic powder.

2. Chocolate

Why it's dangerous: Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which cats can’t metabolize effectively.

Symptoms of poisoning: Vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, restlessness, tremors, and seizures.

Dark chocolate is worst: The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is due to higher theobromine content.

3. Grapes and Raisins

Why it's dangerous: The exact toxic substance is still unknown, but even a small amount can cause acute kidney failure in cats.

Symptoms of poisoning: Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, lethargy, and decreased urination (sign of kidney failure).

No safe amount: Unlike some foods, there's no known “safe” quantity of grapes or raisins for cats.

4. Alcohol

Why it's dangerous: Alcohol (ethanol) affects the nervous system, liver, and brain. Cats are very small, so even a teaspoon of alcohol can be life-threatening.

Sources of exposure: Not just drinks — fermented foods, cleaning products, or mouthwash can be dangerous.

Symptoms of poisoning: Disorientation, vomiting, trouble breathing, coma, and even death.
