This sweet patient’s owner traveled more than 20 km to visit our clinic. We were the third clinic she visited, doing everything possible to save her beloved dog who was suffering from pyometra.

After evaluating her cbc and physical condition, it was apparent that she was not ready for surgery since she also had babesia canis (hematocrit 11% , low platelet, very high wbc from pyometra). We had to stabilize first with medication and trips to a clinic closer to home for hormone injection to support her blood (Thank you Good Shepherd Vet Clinic Liloan!!). A week later, she was finally stable enough to have her surgery. It was a difficult journey, but her owner never gave up.

Another week later, we’re happy to share that she is stable, healing well, and expected to make a full recovery. 🐾

Her recovery is a beautiful reminder of what a dedicated family can do for their beloved companion. No excuses, only action and a positive mindset for things to work out.

We are grateful to have been part of her journey and wish her continued healing! 🐶

❤️ Heartworm Disease in Dogs – Prevention is Better Than Treatment! 🦟🐶

Did you know that mosquitoes can transmit heartworms to your dog? These worms live in the heart and lungs, causing coughing, difficulty breathing, exercise intolerance, weight loss, heart failure, and even death if left untreated.

The good news? Heartworm disease is preventable!

🏥 At our clinic, we offer:
✅ Heartworm blood testing
✅ Safe and effective heartworm prevention
✅ Personalized recommendations based on your pet’s lifestyle

Even dogs that stay mostly indoors can be exposed to mosquitoes.

📅 Protect your furry friend before it’s too late. Schedule a heartworm test and annual prevention, especially now during the rainy season, when mosquitoes have higher population

Another spay carefully done

At VHAC, we aim to provide the absolute best care even for routine procedures. Since this patient was in heat at the time , electrosurgery was used (in addition to regular sutures) to ensure all vessels were properly sealed with no risk of bleeding. We were also especially careful with the drugs administered since the patient has seizure history (epilepsy).

IV fluids were administered throughout surgery and postop, until patient was fully awake. Happy to hear that our patient has recovered well thanks to proper monitoring and medication at home.

Tom is a stray cat living in our village. He grew up here and has been living peacefully for more than four years. He is neutered, updated on vaccines and preventives, and does not approach strangers. He gets unlimited food and shelter at our place, but being a feral cat, he likes to explore during the daytime. On Saturday morning he came for his breakfast with one side of his face badly burned, his flesh hanging and bleeding. This is second day of treatment and most of the damaged flesh has come off, but he is still in a lot of pain.

If you don't want to help stray animals, at least don't hurt them. Report animal cruelty to your local police or barangay office for action. Abusers can be fined 30,000-250,000 php and can face up to three years in prison. This includes harming, eating, abandoning, running over, stealing, and neglecting animals.

Two amazing people contacted us last month to help a stray mama dog who got caught in a trap and had a very tight rope wrapped around her distal limb for weeks. Since the dog was located in a very rural area in the mountains, they had no access to veterinary care. They happily drove us to mama dog's location.

It was no easy feat capturing this very unwilling dog, but with luck, experience, and determination, we were able to successfully examine her limb and remove the rope. Unfortunately, the cut was deeper than expected and required debridement and surgery due to infected and rotting tissue, with the edges needing apposition. I patched up the defect as best I could but did not expect perfect recovery, knowing it would be a very rough postop since our patient was frisky and not used to much handling. It was a happy surprise that she escaped her cage by the afternoon and was already using her injured leg fully by the next day. Fast forward two weeks later, she removed her sutures on her own and aside from a scar, she appears to have recovered very well. 😄

A healthy reminder that good people (and responsible clients) still exist. There is a huge misconception that veterinary care should be free or heavily discounted for rescue animals since it comes from passion. However, love for animals cannot pay for procedures, drugs, diagnostics, staff, clinic bills, training, and the huge loans we have had to take on. Every patient deserves proper consideration and medical care, and those come with real costs. Hoping for the day when supporting this cause also means supporting the professionals who make this level of care possible 🐶
