I always look for this huge dog whenever I pass this area. Sometimes he’s hanging around with the people helping manage the traffic, and sometimes he’s hiding under parked cars, searching for a cooler place to rest. Seeing him safe always makes my day a little better.

One of them ran the moment we got close. While my girlfriend chased after him, I stayed behind to feed the other one.

As I scratched her head, she closed her eyes and soaked up every second of attention. I’ve visited this place over and over again, and it never stops breaking my heart to see how little love some dogs receive.

She kept running from us, scared and unsure of our intentions. After several attempts, she finally stopped. That’s when a tiny puppy suddenly showed up and stayed by her side. We don’t know where the puppy came from, but they seemed inseparable.

The first can disappeared in seconds. I opened a second one, and she finished that just as fast. She ate with a kind of urgency that was hard to ignore.

I can’t say for certain if she had recently given birth, but the way she looked and the way she devoured every bite made me think she had. Whatever the reason, it was clear she was carrying a hunger far greater than her small body could hide.

When I called out to him from my e-bike, he looked at me with eyes that seemed to be asking for something more than food. It was as if all he wanted was a little attention, a little kindness, and someone to acknowledge that he was there.

I couldn’t just leave him behind. So I turned around, went back to him, gave him plenty of pets, and made sure he had a good meal. Seeing him relax and look satisfied made the stop worth it.

If I hadn’t looked under the truck, I would have missed him completely. He stayed hidden, watching every move I made. I could tell he was starving, but hunger wasn’t enough to silence his fear. It took him several moments and all the courage he could gather before he finally took a few careful steps toward me.
