Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly contagious and sometimes lethal disease of dogs and other carnivores caused by a paramyxovirus. CDV is more prone to spread in places with low vaccination rates and a large dog population.
Canine distemper can be spread through direct contact or airborne exposure, such as coughing and sneezing. Distemper in dogs can quickly become serious, so if you suspect that your pet has it, bring your dog to a veterinarian at once.
Distemper in dogs initially causes the following symptoms:
๐Yellow or green eye discharge
๐Nasal discharge
๐Coughing
๐Sneezing
๐Depression
๐Vomiting
๐Decreased appetite
๐Diarrhea
Some dogs appear to have a slight cold with eye and nasal discharge, but others may show no symptoms at all.
As the disease progresses, dogs can develop:
๐Tremors
๐Chewing motions of the jaw
๐Seizures
๐Partial or complete paralysis
๐Pneumonia
๐Crusting of the nose and foot pads
๐Severe vomiting and diarrhea
Distemper in dogs can be prevented through a core vaccine given by a licensed veterinarian. All dogs should remain current on this vaccine throughout their lives.
Distemper in dogs can become serious very quickly, which is why itโs important to bring your dog to a veterinarian promptly if you suspect this disease.
The earlier treatment is started, the better the chance for recovery.
