Heatstroke in Pets: What Every Pet Owner Needs to Know ☀️

We are now at reaching a 39C to 42C heat index in Bulacan! As temperatures rise, our furry companions are at serious risk of heatstroke, a life-threatening emergency that can develop quickly and have lasting consequences.

🌡️ Which pets are most at risk?
While any pet can suffer from heatstroke, some are more vulnerable:
1. Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds – like Bulldogs, Pugs, Shih Tzus, and Persian
2. Thick-coated breeds – such as Huskies and Chow Chows
3. Obese pets
4. Senior pets or very young animals
5. Pets with heart or respiratory conditions

If your suspect your pet having the signs of heatstroke as seen below, seek veterinary care immediately!

⚠️ Avoid using ice baths or very cold water, as this can decrease their temperature (hypothermia) immediately, which may lead to shock. Remember, the goal is to GRADUALLY decrease their body temperature!

⚠️ Possible Complications
Even with treatment, heatstroke can lead to serious long-term effects:
1. Organ failure (kidneys, liver)
2. Brain damage
3. Blood clotting disorders
4. Gastrointestinal injury
5. Death

Today, we’re sharing a hopeful case: Mallow 🐾

Mallow was diagnosed with Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) after presenting with respiratory symptoms and progressive loss of appetite. Through supportive medications with monoclonal antibodies, Mallow gradually gained his appetite, lost his symptoms and became more active. His owners remained committed throughout his recovery, which played a crucial role in his outcome.

CDV is a highly contagious and often life-threatening disease that affects dogs, targeting multiple body systems including the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. It is spread through airborne exposure and direct contact with infected animals or contaminated environments. Clinical signs can vary widely, ranging from fever, nasal discharge, and coughing to vomiting, diarrhea, and, in severe cases, neurological complications such as seizures or muscle tremors.

Now, Mallow is a survivor! He has regained his strength, his appetite is back to normal, and his energy continues to improve. Most importantly, he is now on his preventive care regimen, helping protect him from other infectious diseases moving forward! ❤

We'd also like to appreciate his owners on their dedication on his treatment, love and care for Mallow (and for the tray of eggs!) 🥰

PALE GUMS IN PETS: WHAT DOES IT MEAN? 🐾

Did you know that your pet’s mucous membranes can tell you a lot about their health?

Healthy gums and eye lids should normally appear pink and moist. If your pet’s gums look pale, white, or light pink, this may be a warning sign that something is wrong and needs veterinary attention.

How to check your pet’s gums and eye lids at home:
1. Gums: gently lift your pet’s upper lip. Look at the color of the gums.
2. Eye lids: Pull your pet's lower eye lid downward to see the mucous membrane color.

Healthy = pink
Pale or white = possible concern

Common causes of pale gums in pets:
• Anemia (low red blood cell count)
• Blood loss (internal or external bleeding)
• Tick-borne diseases
• Heart disease
• Severe infections
• Parasite infestation
• Shock or dehydration

Pale gums are NOT NORMAL and should never be ignored! If you notice pale gums, weakness, loss of appetite, vomiting, or lethargy in your pet, have them checked as soon as possible.

🐱 Patient Story: Klay’s Brave Journey 🐾

Meet Klay, a strong and loving mama cat who recently underwent emergency surgery after showing signs of vaginal bleeding at 56 days of her pregnancy.

Klay had a history of previous normal deliveries, but this time around, her pregnancy became life-threatening. Ultrasound examination revealed fetal death with absent heart rate, and further testing showed high bacterial count indicative of an ongoing infection and low platelet levels, making her condition critical and requiring immediate surgical intervention to lower the chances of sepsis.

During surgery, a part of her uterus was ruptured and the affected uterus containing the non-viable fetus was safely removed.

Klay is now back home with her family, continuing her medications and recovery comfortably.

This case reminds us how important it is to seek prompt veterinary care when abnormal discharge or bleeding occurs during pregnancy
