Heat Stroke in Dogs and Cats!
As the temperature soars, our furry friends are at risk of heat stroke! Know the signs, take action, and keep them safe!
Recognizing Heat Stroke:
- Panting, drooling, restlessness, rapid heartbeat, collapse, and seizures
- Body temperature above 104°F (40°C)
Normal Temperature Range:
- 100.5°F - 102.5°F (38°C - 39.1°C)
First Aid:
1. Move to a cool area: Immediately relocate your pet to a shaded or air-conditioned space.
2. Provide cool water: Offer cool water for your pet to drink or use wet cloths to cool them down.
3. Cooling methods: Use fans, cooling pads, or cold compresses to lower their body temperature.
4. Seek veterinary care: Heat stroke can be life-threatening; seek immediate veterinary attention.
Prevention:
1. Provide shade: Ensure your pet has access to shaded areas.
2. Hydration: Offer plenty of fresh water.
3. Avoid exercise: Limit exercise during peak heat hours (usually between 11am and 3pm).
4. Monitor temperature: Keep an eye on the temperature and your pet's behavior.
5. Never leave pets in car: Cars can quickly become heat traps, even with windows cracked.
Preparation:
1. Cooling gear: Invest in cooling pads, mats, or vests.
2. Shaded areas: Create shaded spots in your yard.
3. Water stations: Ensure access to fresh water at all times.
