π¨Cane Toad Poisoning in Dogs π¨
The Cane Toad, also known as the Bufo Toad, is an invasive species introduced to the Philippines in 1930. These large, warty toads secrete a potent toxin from glands behind their eyes. If your dog licks, bites, or mouths a toadβeven brieflyβit can be fatal within minutes.
Symptoms:
πΈ Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
πΈ Bright red or purple gums
πΈ Vomiting or diarrhea
πΈ Seizures or tremors
πΈ Difficulty breathing
πΈ Collapse or uncoordinated movement
What to Do Immediately:
1. Rinse your dogβs mouth with cool water for 10β15 minutes (keep the head tilted downward).
2. Rush to the nearest veterinary clinic.
Time is Critical!
Without prompt treatment, death can occur within 15β20 minutes. Even if your dog seems fine, seek veterinary care immediately.
Prevention Tips:
πΆ Keep your dog on a leash during walks, especially at night or after rain.
πΆ Inspect your yard regularly and remove any toads you find.
πΆ Clean your dogβs food and water bowls regularly to remove any toxin residue.
πΆ Educate family members and neighbors about the risks.
As it's the rainy season, please take precautions to protect your dog from toad poisoning. π
