Why I Don’t BARF My Bullmastiffs: The Reality of Raw Feeding in the Philippines.
I get asked this often by fellow enthusiasts and puppy buyers: “Raw feeding (BARF) is so popular globally — why do you stick to premium kibble?”
The honest answer? Location changes everything.
If we were in Australia — the birthplace of the BARF diet — raw feeding would be a straightforward choice. Australia has robust cold-chain infrastructure, strict biosecurity, and access to exceptional human-grade wild proteins like kangaroo and pasture-raised lamb. Meat moves seamlessly from temperature-controlled facilities to specialized pet butchers with minimal risk.
But we aren’t in Australia. We’re in the Philippines. And in a tropical environment, the rules of canine nutrition change completely.
Here are three reasons why BARF carries serious risk for a large, heavy-boned breed in our climate — and why I choose a premium kibble rotation instead.
1. COLD-CHAIN BREAKDOWN
Heat and humidity are our primary adversaries. In the Philippines, the risk of meat spoilage and dangerous bacterial loads — Salmonella, E. coli — is significantly elevated. Whether it’s open-air wet markets or supermarkets vulnerable to hidden power fluctuations, the cold chain is easily and silently broken.
For a heavy breed, severe bacterial gastroenteritis isn’t just a messy inconvenience. It can cause rapid dehydration, muscle wasting, and lasting damage to gut immunity.
2. ELEVATED PARASITIC AND VIRAL RISKS
Tropical climates are natural incubators for parasites. Raw local pork carries additional dangers — African Swine Fever (ASF) continues to affect regional swine populations, and the ever-present threat of Pseudorabies (Aujeszky’s Disease) — harmless to humans but invariably fatal to dogs upon ingestion of infected raw pork — makes safe sourcing nearly impossible without laboratory-grade verification.
3. STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY AND EXACTING NUTRITION
Bullmastiffs are built for power and proportion. Their joint development, skeletal structure, and movement quality depend on precise calcium-to-phosphorus ratios and consistently high-quality protein.
A miscalculated homemade BARF recipe can permanently compromise a growing puppy’s front assembly or cause knuckling. Excess dietary fat in a hot climate raises the risk of pancreatitis — a serious condition in large, deep-chested breeds.
WHAT I DO INSTEAD: THE PREMIUM KIBBLE ROTATION
✅ Orijen & Acana — Biologically appropriate meat density, processed under sterile, scientifically validated conditions. High inclusions of fresh whole-prey ingredients, organ meats, and cartilage — tested to a standard no home kitchen can replicate.
✅ Petcurean (Go! & Summit) — Rotated in for targeted support. Go! for gut health and coat condition; Summit for balanced, sustained energy and foundational nutrition.
Nutrition isn’t just about what looks good on paper — it’s about the environment you’re feeding in. In a high-heat, high-humidity country with real biosecurity challenges, safety, consistency, and structural precision must come first.
Premium, ultra-high-quality kibble gives me the performance outcomes of a raw diet, without the risks that our climate makes unacceptable.
A quick note: I have deep respect for raw feeders who make it work for their dogs. If you've built a reliable, safe system - that's genuine dedication to your pets, and I admire it. This post isn't about raw feeding being wrong. It's about why it's the wrong fit for my breed, in my climate, in my country.
Nutrition is never one-size-fits-all. Location changes everything.
