It is generally not recommended for both dogs and cats to drink human milk due to their inability to properly digest lactose and the differing nutritional requirements compared to their own species' milk .

Consuming human milk can lead to various digestive problems in dogs, including:

- Vomiting
- Diarrhea or loose stools
- Gas and abdominal pain
- Upset stomach, weakness, and lethargy

Although human milk is generally not deadly for dogs, it can cause significant discomfort and an unpleasant digestive experience. For puppies, human milk is not nutritionally adequate and can lead to developmental issues if used as a substitute for canine milk or dog-specific formula .

Cats and Human Milk

Similar to dogs, most adult cats are also lactose intolerant. As kittens, they produce the enzyme lactase to digest their mother's milk, but this production significantly decreases as they are weaned and transition to solid food .

If an adult cat consumes human milk, the undigested lactose ferments in their large intestine, leading to symptoms such as:

- Diarrhea
- Gas and bloating
- Stomach pain and cramps
- Vomiting
- Dehydration

While some cats might tolerate small amounts of lactose-free milk, human milk is not nutritionally balanced for them and should not be a regular part of their diet. Kittens should also avoid human milk, as it can cause dehydration and they lack the proper enzymes to digest it. The best liquid for cats is fresh water .
