🐾 Ear We Go Again! Aural Hematoma Repair at RPVH!
Our patient underwent aural hematoma repair, a procedure performed to address the accumulation of blood within the ear flap. The surgery was successful, and our patient is now on the road to recovery! 🩺🐾
WHAT IS AN AURAL HEMATOMA?
An aural hematoma occurs when blood accumulates between the skin and cartilage of the ear flap, causing it to become swollen, thickened, and sometimes painful.
WHAT CAUSES IT?
Aural hematomas commonly develop due to repeated head shaking or scratching, which can rupture small blood vessels in the ear. Possible underlying causes include:
-Ear infections (otitis externa)
-Ear mites, especially in cats
-Allergies that cause ear irritation and itching
-Foreign bodies or other sources of ear discomfort
-Trauma or excessive scratching
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE?
Treatment depends on the size, severity, and duration of the hematoma. Options may include medical management in selected cases or surgical drainage and repair for larger, persistent, or recurrent hematomas.
Please contact your veterinarian promptly if any of these signs develop.
At Royal Paws Veterinary Hospital, we are committed to providing quality veterinary care, from diagnosis and treatment to surgical management and recovery.
