Chloe Finn, a Grinfromeartoear mare gifted to prominent Winton breeder Michelle Caig after she finished racing, has left a lasting legacy, producing two winners and a placegetter from three starters during the recent holiday period, all of them racing in Australia.
The Sweet Lou gelding Louie Lou I, the final foal of Chloe Finn, produced a withering late burst to down a strong field at a Cranbourne metropolitan meeting on Saturday night. The win was his ninth and lifted his career earnings to $153,575.
A week earlier, Louie Lou I’s half-brother Dhaulagiri (by American Ideal) stormed home from near last to claim the Christmas Cup at Globe Derby Park, taking his record to 19 lifetime wins and $208,108 in stakes.
“Both of them are ticking along very consistently and have been really well looked after,” Caig said.
Meanwhile, Abull (by Raging Bull), the third foal of Chloe Finn, added further depth to the family when he notched placings at Gore and Roxburgh over the Christmas–New Year period.
Her first foal, Malinka (by Sir Lincoln), won a single race before being retired to the broodmare paddock, where she is now being bred from.
“Chloe Finn had four to the races for four winners,” Caig said.
“I sold them all. Malinka was sold privately, Louie Lou I and Dhaulagiri were knocked down at the yearling sales for $9,000 and $10,000 respectively, and Abull was sold privately as a weanling.”
“Unfortunately Chloe Finn got an infection and had to be put down a few years ago.”
Caig, who has been involved in harness racing for 25 years, is now pinning her hopes on the brilliant young trotting mare Penelope Lane, who continues to underline her immense promise.
“She broke the New Zealand record for three-year-old trotting fillies over 2600 metres twice within three weeks at Oamaru,” Caig said. “She clocked 3:19 on October 19 and then 3:19.4 on November 6, lowering Paramount Empress’s mark of 3:19.5 set at Addington in 2022.”
“Brad Williamson has done a really good job with her. We’ve got big plans for her future.”
Penelope Lane’s half-sister Renezmae, also bred by Caig, enjoyed a standout career, winning seven races and $126,768, including the Breeders Crown 2YO Final, and was crowned Australian 2YO Trotting Filly of the Year in 2017.
The trotting siblings Leaf Stride and Rosemma, along with Gloucester Park pacing winner William Gee’s Legacy, are among several other smart performers bred by Caig, further highlighting the depth of her breeding record.
“I’m only breeding from two now,” she said. “She’s Like The Wind, who has an Orlando Vici filly, and Shake It Up, a sister to the $460,000 earner Enhance Your Calm, who has a Volstead filly.”
“Penelope Lane will join the group when she retires from racing.”
“From the small number of mares that I breed I’ve had a bit of success, and the fact that I can now keep Penelope Lane and race her myself, I’m pretty happy about that.”
