My name is Nadia, I am 26 years old and I have been running my market garden in Northland, New Zealand for 5 years. I am applying for the market gardener masterclass scholarship to take the farm into the next five years with confidence and clarity

When I was 19 years old I was hospitalised with a digestive system that would not work. Overnight I went from a scholarship athlete at the University of Southern California, playing waterpolo and studying chemical engineering, to a skeleton of myself. I lost 17 kilograms and couldn’t eat for 3 weeks. Constantly vomiting, with the episodes lasting up to 10 hours. It was a long recovery where I was bed ridden for a year and sick for 2 years

There was a lot of my life at that time that I couldn’t control. I knew before my illness took me over physically it would get me mentally. I went from a nonstop life of training and studying to doing nothing. So I started growing seeds for vegetables I wanted to grow. It sparked from all the YouTube I was watching and for a deeper need to understand the food that was wreaking havoc on my stomach.

Throughout my journey and recovery one question stuck front and centre: why does it taste so different when you grow it yourself? What were they doing to make supermarket veg taste so bad?

Once I was 90% recovered I made the decision to leave engineering behind and become a market gardener. I had two missions: to provide people with nutrient dense & high quality vegetables and improve people’s connection to the food they eat. So that was it I set out to turn a paddock of grass into a functional market garden … second part in the comments! Market Gardener Institute
