🐈 20-50% of cats over the age of 15 have some degree of chronic kidney disease (CKD) present, making it one of the most common conditions seen in older cats.

Around ⅔ of the total functioning kidney tissue of both kidneys needs to be lost before signs of CKD will be seen.

Look out for these signs in your cat 👇

🐱 Poor appetite
🐱 Increased thirst
🐱 Increased urination
🐱 Loss of weight
🐱 Lethargy

🏥 Talk to your vet about regular health checks for senior cats to help detect the signs of CKD. Support and treatment recommended by your vet can help to slow the progression of the disease and improve your cat’s quality of life.

>Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder marked by elevated blood sugar levels.

>It occurs due to:
- Insufficient insulin production by the pancreas (Type 1 diabetes).
- Resistance of body cells to insulin’s effects (Type 2 diabetes).

>Common symptoms in cats include:
- Increased thirst and urination.
- Weight loss despite increased appetite.
- Lethargy and weakness.
- Severe cases may result in ketoacidosis.

>Management includes:
- Insulin therapy.
- Dietary control.
- Regular blood glucose monitoring.

>Untreated diabetes can cause serious complications and reduce quality of life.

>Obesity is a major risk factor due to:
- Insulin resistance caused by excess fat tissue releasing hormones that disrupt insulin function.
- Increased blood sugar levels leading to pancreatic overwork and exhaustion.

>Sedentary lifestyle and high-carbohydrate diets in obese animals further promote insulin resistance and diabetes development.

WATER

- Water is as essential as other nutrients in a balanced pet diet.

- Water is essential for hydration, digestion, thermoregulation, and all physiological processes.

- Pets must have constant access to clean, fresh water.

- Water bowls should be refilled regularly and placed in easy-to-reach areas.

- Feeding wet or moistened food can boost overall water intake.

- Monitoring drinking habits helps detect issues like dehydration, kidney disease, or diabetes.

- Extra water may be needed during hot weather, increased activity, or diet changes as advised by a veterinarian.

💡🚨 MICROCHIP UPDATE! PLEASE READ 🙏

I had the pleasure of meeting gorgeous Nina this morning for her nail trim. At 18 years old she’s still looking absolutely stunning and very much in her prime.

As part of the Mobile Vet Nurse exclusive care, we always scan every pet’s microchip and check their details are correctly listed on the NZ Companion Animal Register. It’s one of the simplest — yet most important — steps in keeping our pets safe.

Nina’s mum mentioned that over the years many vets have checked whether her chip still scans (which it does beautifully), but the register itself has never been checked. After scanning her today, I discovered that Nina has never been registered.

This means that if she ever went missing, there would have been no way to trace her back home.

All sorted now — she’s fully registered, and both owners’ details are easy to find if ever needed.

Mum was absolutely chuffed. She was expecting just a nail trim, and left with complete peace of mind knowing her girl is now properly protected. 🩷

This is why those little extra checks matter 🙏
Please ask your vet or vet nurse to check your local microchip database if you are unsure your pets microchip registration is up to date 💛

March is National Kidney Month. Feline chronic kidney disease, or CKD, can be managed by your veterinarian. Cats with CKD typically do not show any signs of illness. If you notice your cat is losing weight, drinking more water, has a diminished appetite, or is lethargic, contact your veterinarian right away for a checkup. For more information on CKD, visit https://bit.ly/2oVS0mU.

*Vaccinations*

- Vaccinations are vital for protecting animal health and well-being.

- They prevent a range of infectious and potentially fatal diseases, promoting longer, healthier lives.

- Vaccination helps control the spread of contagious diseases among animals, reducing the risk of zoonotic transmission to humans.

- It represents a key aspect of responsible pet ownership and supports safer communities for both animals and people.

- By preventing disease, vaccinations reduce animal suffering and strengthen the overall health and resilience of animal populations.
