2025

If one is in search of character from their prospective feline family, they would be hard-pressed to find better examples of it than the pair of Meg and Percy. These tabby siblings are practically inseparable, and they can often be found playing upstairs in CPW's headquarters.

Meg, full name Megatron, is the older of the siblings and the primary cause of their separation from the shelter's other cats. A big girl with a larger personality, Meg is easily distinguished from her brother for more reasons than just her cycloptic appearance. Quick to greet any visitor with a somewhat low-pitched 'meow', she is quite an opinionated creature, and when she and her brother lived in the shelter's main room she would often find herself getting into trouble with other cats.

Quickly after the pair started to spend most of their days in the west wing, a further facet of her personality showed itself: Megatron is a very cuddly lap cat. Volunteers often, upon going up to visit the two, find themselves with Megatron seated on their lap [and her little brother generally sitting alongside]. The only real exception to this is when there is a particularly strong sunbeam somewhere in the room, in which case Meg usually prefers that, leaving Percy to sit on or next to the free lap as he desires.

Speaking of Percy, full name Percy-Pie, he is both the younger and the more timid of the two. Where Meg will generally respond to visitors with her recognisable meow, Percy typically responds to their approach more cautiously. Oftentimes he tries to hide away beneath one of the upstairs room's couches, only to come back out either upon recognition of the interloper or once his braver sister shows him her lack of fear.

When Percy has decided that you are his friend, he will often respond to an outstretched hand with a dolphin-like hop to take a pat. Though he may not be the most adventurous gentleman, he makes up for his lower confidence with a lot of love; love that is by no means reserved only for his older sister! Distinguished from her not only by virtue of his binocular nature, but his white paws and slightly larger build, Percy-Pie certainly has enough room in his stature for however much affection he may receive!

In summary: whoever is lucky enough to bring these two into their home won't only have little need for any more pets, they likely won't have enough room!

Please welcome to the CPW whānau this week… one young troublemaker!!

🐾 Bostin (2yo male) has come to the shelter as he was sadly being bullied by some neighborhood cats. He was born wild, but with a lot of love and patience from his rescuers, has turned into the smoochiest young boy you could ever meet 😽

He’s on outdoors lover, but enjoys a good cuddle, head tickles, and strokes all down his back in the evenings with his people 😻 He has the strongest head-boops, and will let you know just how much he loves you by rubbing against your legs wherever you try to walk!

Bostin is currently on anti-anxiety medication, but will likely be able to wean off it once he is in a safe, loving, forever home. He will be happiest in a quiet home with no other pets, away from busy roads.

Sometimes a cat comes through our doors who really has a hard time finding their perfect home. One such cat is Olly.
Originally surrendered to us in 2020 he had already had two homes. He was then adopted to what should have been an ideal home for him, but his owners job situation changed and a dog was allowed to harass him. Poor Olly didn't cope and started acting up. So back he came.
Not surprisingly, Olly was anxious and distrustful. He didn't respond well to strangers and so potential adopters were put off.
And then it happened. After more than a year in the shelter two wonderful women came to meet Olly. They were patient and tolerant. They spent hours out on our deck in the cold over multiple visits to gain his trust. Then they took him home.
From day one Olly was pampered and adored. He even gets taken on outings in his catmobile!
Two weeks ago was the second anniversary of Olly's gotcha day and to celebrate his lovely owners called to say they wanted to donate to us. Last week they arrived with an incredibly generous quantity of cat food.

Thank you Kirsten and June - from the bottom of our hearts.

Please enjoy these photos of Olly living his very best life.

We're nearing the end of National Volunteer Week and we want to send a huge shout out to all of our amazing volunteers. Cleaning, feeding, fundraising, committee - they're not the most glamorous jobs!! But our wonderful team do it all with a smile and we couldn't be more grateful. Without our volunteers, who would attend to 16 year old Minxies every whim?

Please welcome to the CPW whānau this week… three black-and-white beauties! 🖤🤍

🐾 Chuddy & Biscuit (11yo male & female) are a bonded pair who’ve come to us after their family had to relocate overseas. These two are lifelong companions who are now looking for a forever home where they can stay side by side.

Chuddy is the more confident of the two. He’ll be the first to say hello and loves a good back scratch, lap time, and play with his toys! He’s a social, smoochy boy who’s great with kids and even okay with dogs 😻 He’s used to outdoor access and has been known to catch the occasional bird 🐦

Biscuit is the smaller and more reserved of the two. She takes a little longer to trust, but once she’s comfortable, she adores gentle strokes and brushing. While not a lap cat, she’s happy to curl up beside you and keep you company 😽 Like her brother, she’s lived with cats, dogs, and children—but she definitely needs access to the outdoors and a bit of peace and quiet while she adjusts 💚

These two are a bonded pair and must be adopted together.

🐾 Chareth (11yo female) is an elegant lady looking for calm and comfort in her golden years. After struggling with the hustle and bustle of a busy household, she’s ready for a quieter home where she can set the pace and be her lovely, independent self.

Chareth is an affectionate little lady (on her own terms of course) and enjoys pats down her back, head tickles, and will happily claim a lap when she’s feeling safe and secure. She also likes to chase toys and has a strong instinct for catching rodents 🐭

She’s not keen on sharing her space with dogs, cats, or young children and would be happiest as the queen of her own quiet kingdom. If you’ve got a peaceful home and a spot in the sun for her to call her own, Chareth might just be your perfect match 🖤

Get in touch to meet these sweeties! They’re waiting patiently for the loving homes they deserve!

Please welcome to the CPW whānau this week… three very special boys! 🖤

🐾 Tamati (3yo male) is a playful little guy who showed up as a stray and was taken in by a kind homeowner. Unfortunately, the resident cat wasn’t too thrilled to share their space, so Tamati is now with us, looking for a forever home where he can be the centre of attention.
Tamati is small in size but big in charm! He loves to be groomed, enjoys curling up on laps, and is always up for a good head tickle 😽
While he can be shy at first, he’s happy to be picked up once he trusts you, especially if there are snacks involved!
This food-motivated cutie would do well in a home with someone who is around most of the day to give him attention, affection, and plenty of playtime 💕

🐾 Cami & Utcha (4yo males) are a bonded brother duo who were heartbreakingly surrendered after their family had to move overseas. Despite trying everything, they couldn’t secure a safe passage for their beloved boys and made the tough decision to find them a new home.
Both boys are gentle homebodies who take a little while to warm up, but once they feel safe, they’re total lap lovers 🖤
Cami especially enjoys the company of children and loves being groomed, stroked, and snuggled. Utcha is a sweet and smoochy lad once you earn his trust and loves pats, brushes, and a quiet place to snooze.
They’ve both had outdoor access in the past and may occasionally hunt a mouse or insect, but they’re happiest relaxing at home together 😻

Cami and Utcha must be adopted as a pair as they’re very bonded and bring each other comfort and confidence.

Here are SIX warm and fuzzy stories to beat the winter blues – one for each happy cat who’s just found their awesome new home!

Bella Bloom (16) was flown down to us from Auckland as she couldn’t find either a home or a rescue to look after her when her person had to go overseas. The rescues couldn't take her due to her age, and vets recommended euthanasia. The tiny ginger girl was on meds for hyperthyroidism and arthritis, and after being checked by our vets, ended up with a rather fetching “lion cut” which left her with a cute fluffy face, fluffy socks, and a fluffy tail! She is lively and loves people, cuddles and meals. She has been fostered under our Care for Life permanent foster programme, by a lovely young woman. Bella is now in a secure apartment where she has lots of company, and is making herself completely at home.

Wolfie (1) is our madcap, energetic young fella who loves making friends with both cats and people, despite his rough start on the streets. He has now been fostered (as he is FIV+), by an awesome couple who love his outgoing personality. They have a two-storey home where Wolfie can zoom up and down the stairs. Although they had an outgoing and playful energy to match his, they also had him lying upside down in their arms, totally relaxed and blissed out! Lastly, he might even get his very own toybox, since he had an adorable habit in the shelter of jumping up to choose his own wand toys!

Although Sass (4) has a bold name and a magnificent frame, and torties are sometimes barely tame, this girl is a big, shy softie. She needed a quiet home after her person passed away, and has now gone to live with a lovely couple. She has a spacious house with a big, safe, green area outside to explore, and we've since heard that she's been getting braver by the day!

Petra (7) was stressed out by the stray cats hanging around her previous home, leaving her nervous and missing her outdoor time. When she feels safe, she's affectionate and happy to be patted and brushed. A couple had visited the CPW shelter to meet another cat, but they sadly didn’t connect with it. However, Petra did some seriously cute waves and rollovers to get their attention, and they ended up adopting her instead. Once she's settled, she will have access to as much outdoor time as she likes!

Sheldon (8) was adopted from us two years ago, but came back when his family decided to go travelling and he was left without a home. This affectionate boy was spotted only a week after arriving back in the shelter, leaving a week later with a couple that are home a great deal. On their second meeting, Sheldon was ever so snuggly, rolling over for tummy rubs, and keeping that charm turned up to maximum wattage! He will have love and cuddles, and his own garden to enjoy.

Mrs Brown is a tiny tortieshell lady of advanced years, who was sadly abandoned by her owners. People moving into the property found her under the house and tried to bring her into the family – but their first cat was having none of it! As winter was coming on, they felt she needed more care, so she came in to CPW. In our care, she started on meds for hyperthyroidism, got her claws clipped and her mats groomed out, and was booked in for dental care. She is now a much happier little cat, even more so since being fostered by an awesome couple who have fostered a senior for us before. They are totally cat-focused and fell in love with her immediately. They’re used to a cat with medical issues and aren’t fazed by her unknown age, and she will have constant care and company in her new home. She is now sleeping on the bed and asking for pats, having settled into luxury faster than any of us expected!

Please welcome to the CPW whānau this week... two smoochy homebodies!

🐾 Prince Louis (9yo male) is a shy sweetheart who’s learning to trust again. After his owner could no longer care for him, a kind neighbour stepped in to help until a space opened up at the shelter. Now, Prince Louis is settling in and showing us his gentle, affectionate side 😽
Once he feels safe, he loves curling up close to your face or napping right on your chest 🖤 He enjoys a good pat (in small doses at first!) and has recently discovered the thrill of playing with toys!
Louis is used to a quiet, indoor life with the occasional cautious wander outdoors—but he’s definitely more lover than hunter. He’d love a peaceful home where he can be the only pet, but he’d be okay with a gentle, patient child or teen too.

🐾 Sheldon (8yo male) is an absolute smooch who’s back with us after his family made plans to travel.
Sheldon is a classic lap cat who lives for snuggles, cuddles, and being wherever his people are. He’s not too keen on being brushed, but he’ll happily soak up all the pats you’ve got to give! 😻
Sheldon is used to having access to the outdoors, but much prefers hanging out inside with his humans. With his easygoing and affectionate nature, Sheldon would be a perfect match for someone retired or working from home who’s ready for a loyal companion 💛 He needs to be the only pet in the house, so no other cats or dogs, please!

🤎 Please note, lovely Sheldon is already on hold! 🤎

Now that Stanley has your attention... :P

2025

As is often the case with models as photogenic as this exceedingly handsome gentleman, Stanley has a reputation around the shelter for being something of a diva. In short, he is a cat of two (perhaps three) personalities: At times, Stanley is staunchly independent, a thing of beauty to be marveled at from a distance. As with a sculpture at an art museum, this young man is better to be observed and admired from afar. Unlike a sculpture at an art museum, Stanley is more likely to scratch than to result in your removal from the premises!

At other times, though, Stanley can be the most affectionate creature that you've ever seen. Not necessarily a lap cat per se, when Stanley opts to sit beside someone (typically on the arm of the couch they are occupying) he loves a head or chin scratch, and to have such a statuesque figure purring by your side is a comfort like few others.

As for the third personality, Stanley is still young. When feeling playful, he reveals a strain of silliness that one might not expect from such an otherwise stoic and serious man. Having such an expressive face, someone would likely be doing themself a disservice by not playing with him, and Stanley certainly isn't opposed to the attention! But all the same, Stanley's independent streak remains; he is more than happy, when the mood finds him, to play on his own too.

Please welcome to the CPW whānau this week… one sweet senior lady!

🐾 Mrs Brown (approx. 11yo female) is an affectionate older lady who’s had a rough couple of years. Presumed abandoned in 2022, she was found living under a house and cared for by the homeowner, but sadly, the resident cat wouldn’t accept her, no matter how many times they tried. With another winter coming up, they thought it was best for her to find a home where she can keep her old bones warm!

Now safe with us, Mrs Brown is soaking up every bit of love she can get. She’s a true lap cat who adores snuggles, pats, and a warm lap to nap on. She could happily purr away beside you for hours 😻 Despite her age, she's even shown that she likes to play like a kitten with the toys around her!

While we don’t know her exact age, her hearing and vision are starting to fade, and she’s been diagnosed as hyperthyroid. Despite this, she’s still got plenty of love to give and is simply looking for a calm, cozy retirement home with no other pets to compete with 🧡

Mrs Brown is part of our Senior Foster – Care for Life programme, so there’s no foster fee. Just bring your love and a warm spot by the heater 😸

Saving the world, one cat at a time.

Every year in Wellington, hundreds of cats find themselves homeless.

We can help when cats can’t stay with their families, by taking them into our shelter and keeping them fed, healthy and loved until they find new homes.

Our shelter is an airy, comfortable place where cats can choose to relax on big sofas or a sunny deck, or find a quiet hideyhole of their own.

Cats at CPW are cared for by dedicated volunteers who take the time to get to know their personalities, likes and dislikes. This helps us keep the cats happy, and to match them with the best possible forever home. Our shelter is at 29 Vancouver Street, Kingston, Wellington, and it’s open to visitors 12pm - 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays. We usually have around 30 cats in the house. If you have any questions or need advice, ring the shelter on 04 389 9668 or send us a message through Facebook. There’s more information at http://www.catsprotectionwellington.org.nz/.
