**Final Ian Galloway Park Plan**

From WCC

Kia ora,
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on the draft Ian Galloway Park Plan. We appreciate the insights and perspectives shared by our community.

In total, we received 240 survey submissions and 39 email submissions from a wide range of individuals, community groups, environmental organisations, and recreational users. Feedback was generally supportive of the draft Plan, with 78% expressing support for the overall direction. A summary of this feedback can be found attached.

While not every suggestion has been included in the final plan, all contributions were carefully considered. The plan reflects a balance between community aspirations, environmental sustainability, recreational needs, and the practical realities of funding and site conditions.

Final Plan
The final plan is now available to view on our website and attached to this email for your convenience.

What are key changes since the draft Plan was consulted on?

Future court provision: potential area for new courts has been identified at Ian Galloway Park, subject to further network demand analysis, feasibility and funding. This responds to ongoing feedback about court shortages.

Sportsfield lighting: floodlighting at ‘the Cage’, to enable increased training capacity for sports groups, has been brought forward to a medium-term opportunity (0-10+ years). This could now proceed if external funding is secured.

Play space location confirmed: the preferred location for the new local play space is the southern area of Ian Galloway Park.

Rationale: Better safety, proximity to accessible toilets, skate ramps, BMX track and the dog park.

Context: While 58% of surveyed future users valued connection with the sportsfields, informal play elements can be delivered near the fields using Plimmer funding along with improved pathways connecting these spaces.

Future potential: In the longer term, as sportsfield utilisation increases, the formal play space may be relocated to the more central sportsfield location. The southern site could then potentially be repurposed as a dog area, reusing the play equipment at small dog area, reusing the play equipment at end-of-life. Life.

What hasn’t changed since the draft Plan?

Sportsfield surface improvements: the artificial turf proposal for ‘the Cage’ remains a longterm aspiration (10–20+ years). Feedback was mixed—strong support but also notable opposition due to impacts on rugby. Any change remains dependent on alternative rugby provision within the park as part of closed landfill remediation, demand and feasibility analysis, and funding.

Preferred pump track location / dog park: the preferred location for a community funded, community-scale pump track remains to the south of the sportsfields near the BMX track. This is subject to technical feasibility and funding.

The existing dog park remains in place. While some sought relocation to expand wheeled‑sport facilities into this space, no suitable alternative sites exist for the dog park. Retention reflects strong use of and support for the current location.

What are the next steps?

Now the plan is finalised, the park will undergo some changes. Through the 2024–34 Longterm Plan, funding has been confirmed for:

$1 million (Charles Plimmer Bequest) in 2026/27 for landscape and amenity improvements guided by this Plan.

$250,000 for a new local play space.

These projects will progress to detailed design and consenting before construction.

At this stage, these are the projects within current budgets. Other opportunities identified in the plan may be delivered over time as additional funding becomes available. Council will continue to work with partners and the community to explore future funding and delivery options.

***WCC WANT YOUR FEEDBACK***

Between 16 March – 12 April (midnight), Wellington City Council is running a public engagement about how we listen to the communities of Pōneke Wellington. We welcome your ideas on this.

About this project

Everyone should be able to have their say on Council projects and decisions that affect or are of interest to them. We’re inviting all Wellingtonians to share their ideas on how the Council engages with communities, and what we can do to improve. Thanks to Thomas our local WCC ranger for staking the 'challenged' pittosporums which are still fighting to survive around the western side of the fence, and give us some summer shade in the hotter months.

He has also staked the totara trees in the park raised beds which were kindly provided by Wellington City Council for the dogs to lay beside on the shady sides and owners to sit around.
In the summer months it will be important to water the trees in the raised beds and the pittis until they're "fighting weight" and aren't we lucky to have running water at the dogpark!

We will put some containers inside the entrance to fill up with water and spread around the trees soon but if anyone can think of a better idea, please tell us!

Hey folks, just a heads up that we have our 2025 Capital Champs on Saturday 29th November. We'll be setting up from around 7am, and the event is likely to finish around 3.30pm. We have an event permit for parking on the top fields (subject to weather) so the normal Whitehead road carpark should still be ok for dog park users. let me know if you have any questions. This is what the BMX Club call replanting then I think we're better off without it. Interesting how much care they took in their own planting of shrubs and space left around them. Our ones get ripped out, exposed to the air for days on end then shoved hard up against the fence and badly replanted it that

Very disappointed today to see trees ripped out, which were kindly planted by Wellington City Council Rangers to give some shade to the dog park in the hotter months.
On calling WCC we were told the BMX group did this. WCC asked them to reinstate. They didn't. The trees are now dying.

Over the past few months, Council officers have gathered community insights to help inform the draft plan. We have also been documenting and analysing the parks constraints and opportunities to guide future development. This work feeds into the draft plan, which we are now seeking feedback on.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧
The draft plan has four key objectives: recover, diversify, enhance and connect. Within these objectives are key moves which outline the intended direction of change over time for these parks to achieve the objectives. Each key move lists initiatives that have been identified or suggested following early engagement with interest groups.
