💚 What’s my age again? 💚

You're looking at four of the oldest kākāpō alive. We don’t know the exact age of the population founders, but we do know the minimum age of some of them.

For example - we've used knowledge of breeding, genetics and historic data to learn that while Nora was discovered in 1980, she is at least 51, and Rangi was discovered in 1981 but is at least 53. They may be much older.

We also suspect there are some living kākāpō even older than Nora and Rangi. Margaret-Maree was discovered in 1985, and Ruth in 1991. Their egg sizes have declined over time, which could be a sign of old age. Whereas, Nora, Lisa and Alice – who we think are all about the same age – still lay large eggs.

It has been estimated that kākāpō could live to anywhere between 60-90 years old... time will tell!
