Dr Fiona and Vet Nurse Hannah had an enjoyable time at Green Bay High School this week. They were able to share their insights into the Veterinary Profession with students who are keen to pursue a career within this industry.

CAREER TALKS:
This week's Kawhe Kōrero was presented by our local Blockhouse Bay Vets: Dr Fiona Tritton, Dr Caroline from MPI and Vet nurse Hannah. It was great to see students so interested and engaged - taking part and getting hands-on learning with the test dummy animals.

GBHS's weekly 'Kawhe Kōrero' sessions are held each Tuesday lunchtime in E3, allowing students to ask real questions and have them answered by real people in the industry.

COMING UP (Term 3)
• Tuesday 8th September: DOCTOR / NURSE - with guest speakers: Dr April Garton, from Waitakere Hospital; Jessica Lawson, Community Nurse from Parkinsons NZ.

If you would like to come along and share your career insights, or for more information, please email GBHS Careers Department or phone: 817-8173 ext 279.

🐦 Bird Flu (HPAI) Update for Our Community

You may have seen the recent news confirming two cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, in New Zealand.

At Blockhouse Bay Vets, we don't routinely provide veterinary care for pet birds. However, we will continue to assist injured or compromised wild birds where there are welfare concerns, while taking appropriate precautions to help protect our community, local wildlife and pet birds.

To help minimise any risk of disease spread, we've updated our procedures for admitting wild or found birds.

If you find a SICK or DEAD wild bird:

🦆 Please don't touch or handle it. Keeping your distance is the best way to reduce the risk of disease transmission. If you believe a bird might need urgent assistance, please call first. Our team can assess the situation and advise you on the safest next steps.

🦆 If you've found an INJURED wild bird and need to bring it to the clinic, please call us from the car park before entering. This allows our team to guide you through the safest admission process.

We'll continue to monitor the situation closely and follow the latest guidance from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

⚠️ If you see three or more sick or dead birds in the same location, do not handle them. Keep your distance and report them to MPI by calling the Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

Thank you for helping us protect our pets, wildlife and wider community. 💙

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to get in touch with our team.

As we take time to celebrate Matariki, please note that Blockhouse Bay Vet Centre will be closed this Friday.

If your pet needs urgent veterinary care while we're closed, please contact VSA or Western After Hours Veterinary Clinic.

We'll be back as usual on Saturday, 8:30am–2:00pm.

With the long weekend approaching, please remember to:
🐾 Allow plenty of time for prescription refill requests to be processed.
🐾 Book appointments for next week in advance, as we are often very busy following a long weekend.

We wish all of our clients and their pets a safe, happy, and relaxing Matariki. ✨

In for radiographs and some diagnostics today, this Labradorable boy also happened to be turning 7. So of course, he had his care served up with a special cake (hoovered in record time) and lots of cuddles with Dr. Kate 🎂🐶🥰💛💚💙 Happy birthday Lexall!

🐾 Poor Mojo had quite the ordeal yesterday after becoming snared in a glue trap, leaving his tail and foot firmly stuck.

Glue traps cause immense distress, often leaving animals trapped for hours and causing painful injuries as they struggle to escape. They can also harm pets and wildlife and are banned for sale and use in New Zealand under animal welfare legislation.

Thankfully, Mojo's family acted quickly and brought him straight in to see Dr. Shirlene and the team. After some careful cleaning, treatment, and a few well-earned calming treats, he was much more comfortable and ready to head home to continue recovering with plenty of rest and cuddles.

❤️ We're very pleased to report that Mojo is doing well.

If you find an animal caught in a glue trap:

🐾 Do not pull the animal free, as this can cause further injury.
🐾 If possible, gently cover the trap with a towel to help keep the animal calm.
🐾 Contact your vet as soon as possible for advice and treatment.

For more information about humane and restricted pest control methods, the Ministry for Primary Industries provides helpful guidance:

After a play session with a mysterious kitten in the mirror came to a crashing end, Micky's mum brought him in for a check-up. 😻

While we checked his eyes and range of movement, Micky showed us he was as agile as ever, giving our dental X-ray machine a thorough inspection and exploring the treatment area.

Side note: Micky may have the softest fur we've ever felt. We'll be needing his self-care tips. ✨🐾
