✨ Surgery Spotlight: FHO Surgery in Action ✨🦴

Watch Dr. Shirlene perform a Femoral Head Ostectomy — a surgery that can transform painful, unstable hips into happy, mobile ones 🐶💪

This brave patient had Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease, where the “ball” of the hip joint crumbles due to lost blood supply. The solution? Remove the damaged bone so a new, pain-free joint can form ❤️

Already on the mend, this lucky guy has a bright future of pain-free play 🐾

📺 Powerful piece on TVNZ’s Seven Sharp tonight, spotlighting the amazing work Dogwatch Sanctuary Trust is doing in Christchurch to protect vulnerable dogs through pop-up parvo vaccination stations 🐾💉

Parvovirus is a serious and often fatal disease, especially in puppies — but the good news is, it’s highly preventable with timely vaccination 💙

As primary pet health-care professionals, we love seeing this kind of proactive mahi. Making vaccines accessible in at-risk communities can be a game changer for animal welfare.

We’re always here to chat about your pup’s schedule, what protection they need, and how we can support their long-term health 🐶✨

If you’re unsure where your dog is at with their vaccines, give us a call. Together, we all play a role in preventing the spread of parvo. 💙

Earlier this week, we shared tips on helping our canine companions feel more at ease at the vet… but what about our feline friends?

Cats are creatures of comfort and routine, so a trip to the vet can feel like a big deal. A little prep can make a big difference:

🏠 Make the Carrier a Safe Space
Keep it out at home with cosy bedding, treats, and favourite toys so it feels familiar—not just a sign of a vet visit.

🚗 Car Rides Without the Stress
Start with short, calm drives that don’t end at the clinic. A quiet car and a towel over the carrier can help your cat feel safe and secure.

💚 Build Positive Associations
Use treats, praise, and gentle handling to reward calm behaviour. Practice touching paws, ears, and gently opening their mouth to make vet exams feel less unfamiliar.

Shout-out to Luna and her lovely humans! 🐱
First-time cat parents, they did a fantastic job making Luna’s carrier a happy, safe place—she was calm and confident during her visit for her vaccine and health check today. Well done! 👏

Got a new or nervous kitty? We’re happy to help—just give us a call! 📞🐾

Meet Nico — our spotty superstar who's been cruising through his puppy vaccine schedule like a pro! 💉🐶

Vaccinations are essential for protecting your pup from preventable diseases, but regular vet visits also help build confidence and trust.

🧡 We love when pets pop in between appointments — even just for a quick weigh-in or a treat from our team! For younger or more nervous pets, these low-pressure visits can make a big difference in helping them feel safe and relaxed during future exams or treatments.

💬 Did you know? Our reception team and nurses are always happy to chat about your pet’s diet or parasite treatments while dishing out cuddles and encouragement. We also record weight changes in your pet’s file, so everything’s up to date for your next vet consult!

🐾 Pro tip: Gently handling your puppy’s paws, ears, and face from an early age helps make future nail trims, ear checks, and exams much easier (and less stressful!) for everyone involved.

Nico’s been a total champ at every step. Swipe to see how much he’s grown — from a tiny pup to a leggy little explorer, full of curiosity. 🖤

🕊️ A Special Visitor 🕊️

Earlier this week, a concerned client brought in a beautiful kererū who appeared to be suffering injuries affecting it's mobility. After a gentle assessment with Dr Liz, and a quick call to our nearby friends at BirdCare Aotearoa, the decision was made to transfer this precious taonga into their expert hands.

On arrival in Green Bay, our nurse (and impromptu kererū courier!) learned of two more incoming manu with similar stories — but also some uplifting news: three rehabilitated kererū had just been released back into the wild that morning. 🌿💚

Now under specialist care in the BirdCare Aotearoa ICU, this feathered friend is receiving oxygen and pain relief, with clinical signs suggesting a possible collision injury. We’re holding hope that this big beauty will survive, knowing they are in the very best hands.

🌱 Why kererū matter:
Kererū are more than just gorgeous — they’re crucial to our ecosystems. As one of the only birds large enough to swallow and spread the seeds of native trees like karaka, miro, tawa, and taraire, they play an irreplaceable role in regenerating our native forests.

If you’d like to support the care and recovery of native birds like this special patient, please consider donating to BirdCare Aotearoa:

There was no such thing as Tuesday Blues-day when Nova the Leonberger dropped by for a skin check-up with Dr Shirlene today 🐾💛 Lucky for us, she prescribed a healthy dose of cuddles with the team!

This majestic breed hails from 1800s Germany, developed by Heinrich Essig — who blended Saint Bernard, Newfoundland, and Great Pyrenees to create a gentle giant with a lion-like presence (though we think Nova’s more of a giant teddy bear than a lion).

Leonbergers can grow up to 80kg and stand as tall as 80cm at the shoulder — big, beautiful, and built for hugs. Just look at the size of those feet!

Nova, you’re pure magic. ✨🦁

🌌✨ Mānawatia a Matariki from all of us at Blockhouse Bay Vets! ✨🌌
💫 What are your plans this Matariki?
Share a photo in the comments over the weekend or email it to us on [email protected] and go in the draw to win a mystery Matariki prize! 🎁✨ 🌟 Bonus whetū (stars) if your photo connects to one of the nine stars of Matariki!

📌 Heads-up: We’ll be closed tomorrow (Friday) in honour of Matariki, and back open Saturday from 8:30am–2pm.

Matariki marks the Māori New Year — a special time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look to the future with hope. It’s about connection, renewal, and gathering with whānau — including the furry and four-legged kind 🐶🐱🐰🐾

Fred the schnauzer is hoping for a windswept beach run with his sausage buddy Bob at their favourite spot — Kakamatua 🌊🐾 Maybe they’ll pause to honour Waitī and Waitā, stars tied to our rivers and oceans, or Ururangi, guardian of the winds.

Tom and Ingo are heading for the māra (garden) 🌱🪴 — exploring under Tupuānuku (food from the earth), sniffing the air for Tupuārangi (food from above — no catching birds please, boys!), and hoping for nourishing showers from Waipuna-ā-rangi, the star of rain and renewal (the forecast says they may be out of luck there!).

Barry’s lining up a competitive games night, while Jenga and Scrabble are dreaming of a cosy cuddle pile by the heater 🔥🧩 — resting their eyes on Matariki, the star of health and well-being.

🌟 For those of you who’ve said goodbye to a beloved companion this year, our hearts are with you. We'll be taking a quiet moment to reflect under Pōhutukawa, the star of remembrance.

However you spend this weekend, we hope you take a moment to wish upon Hiwa-i-te-rangi, the star of dreams and aspirations. We are wishing you a safe, prosperous and healthy year with your whānau ❤️
Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori — from the team at Blockhouse Bay Vets.

🦷 Sunday news: choosing chews! 🐾

Sweet Lulu recently visited us after breaking some of her teeth chewing on hard wood and bark in the garden. Ouch! 😢 Dental fractures like Lulu’s can be painful and often require treatment or removal.

Why does this happen?
Chewing is a normal and healthy behaviour for dogs — it helps relieve boredom, manage anxiety, and even clean teeth. But not all chew items are safe.

Here are some safe chew tips to help protect your dog's teeth:

✅ Safer alternatives:
Rubber toys made for dogs (and the right size)
Dental chews (vet-approved)
Softer rawhide alternatives like pork/fish skins or yak chews
👉 Side fact: Traditional rawhide is not recommended — it can be a choking hazard and hard to digest.

🚫 Avoid:
Sticks, wood, or rocks
Bones (they’re too hard, and sharp when broken!)
Hard nylon toys that don’t give under pressure

💡 Tips to remember:
If you can’t dent it with your fingernail, it’s probably too hard for your dog’s teeth.
Chewing — even with the right items — should always be supervised.

What if your dog loves chewing everything?
🐾 Supervise outdoor time
🐾 Offer engaging chew toys indoors
🐾 Rotate toys regularly to keep things interesting

Lulu is now on the mend, but she hopes her story helps others avoid the same trouble 💗
If you’re unsure what’s safe for your dog to chew, we’re always happy to help!
