Handy Hint - with the sudden arrival of this squally weather ewes will often drop their lambs. If you have some needing a bit of extra protection from the weather but you dont want to take off mum and you run out of proper lamb covers, bread bags make an excellent emergency cover. Keeping the lamb dry and providing some wind protection so they dont lose as much body temperature this can be the difference between a live and dead lamb. The bread bags also take up minimal space in your pocket!

A pic from a case last spring has reminded us of how animals can be injured in many and various ways. This horse was being ridden through some cut over scrub and came up abruptly lame. On initial exam all that could be seen was a bit of bloody discharge from a small wound at the top of the coronet. Further exploration under sedation found a twig had punctured through and was lying just under the hoof wall and had been broken off just under the skin surface with the horse's movement. As can be seen in the picture the twig was almost as long as the horses hoof.
The injury doesnt heal quickly in this area - instead there will be a weakness in the hoof wall as the damaged coronet piece grows down over the next 6-12 months and care needs to be taken as this nears the ground that infection doesnt get in the damaged area and track up the hoof.
