Wairoa Farm Vets certainly hit the ground running on our first day back this year. We were called out to a foal this morning that was unable to get up and was very lethargic following the heavy rain over the weekend.

On initial examination, the foal was found to be severely dehydrated and in shock. She was rushed back to the clinic in the back of the ute, while mum followed shortly after in the float.

Once at the clinic, the whole team got stuck in. Further assessment showed the foal was hypoglycaemic, so an IV catheter was placed and she was given glucose along with shock-rate fluids.

Within a couple of hours, she was able to lift her head, and not long after she was standing. As she was still struggling to suckle from mum, we milked mum out and fed the foal via a stomach tube.

We’re pleased to say she’s already looking much brighter and is now back out in the paddock, running around with mum. Fingers crossed she continues to improve and makes a full recovery.

A great example of excellent teamwork from everyone involved.

Welcome Back, Alyse!

We’re super excited to have Alyse back at work today after her maternity leave!

She’ll be in the clinic on Mondays and Tuesdays, and we know many of you will be thrilled to see her familiar face again. Alyse’s experience, skill and the calm expertise she brings to every case are a massive boost for our small animal team and a huge win for our patients.

Make sure to say hi if you see her around the clinic!

🐴 Equine Care at Wairoa Farm Vets 🐴

Over the past few weeks, we’ve had several equine patients staying with us in the paddock behind the clinic. Having horses hospitalised here allows us to monitor and treat them closely — saving owners both time and mileage costs.

This setup makes it easier for everyone and ensures your horses receive quality care while recovering or undergoing treatment.

If your horse needs veterinary attention or you’d like to learn more about our equine services, get in touch with the team — we’re here to help!

Today we welcomed Charlotte to our team👋

Charlotte is a fifth year vet student from Germany 🇩🇪 who will be working with us for the next two months. She has already spent 4 weeks adventuring around Aotearoa and is now learning some great skills in Wairoa! 🙌

Needless to say, she didn’t waste any time getting stuck in! 🐶 🐮 🐈‍⬛ 🐴 🐑
