Wairoa Farm Vets certainly hit the ground running on our first day back this year. We were called out to a foal this morning that was unable to get up and was very lethargic following the heavy rain over the weekend.
On initial examination, the foal was found to be severely dehydrated and in shock. She was rushed back to the clinic in the back of the ute, while mum followed shortly after in the float.
Once at the clinic, the whole team got stuck in. Further assessment showed the foal was hypoglycaemic, so an IV catheter was placed and she was given glucose along with shock-rate fluids.
Within a couple of hours, she was able to lift her head, and not long after she was standing. As she was still struggling to suckle from mum, we milked mum out and fed the foal via a stomach tube.
We’re pleased to say she’s already looking much brighter and is now back out in the paddock, running around with mum. Fingers crossed she continues to improve and makes a full recovery.
A great example of excellent teamwork from everyone involved.
