👉🏽 Truth moment; Either you have a fat Labrador or you at least know someone that does, or you saw one on your walk today.

⚠️ 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗯𝗲𝘀𝗲?

😒 To be honest, a part from my own Labrador, I don’t think I’ve met one recently that was the correct weight.

👎🏽 As a breed, many pet parents make the excuse that because they love food so much, it’s normal for them to be overweight.

‼️ Overweight dogs are in pain. They suffer from joint issues, early on set arthritis, more prone to cancer and other degenerative diseases and 𝙙𝙞𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧.

➡️ Although there are different types of Labradors that have different body structures, absolutely no breed standard calls for the breed to be overweight.

➡️ The best way to determine a dog’s body condition score is to do a "hands on" check. This is when the pet parent physically touches the dog's ribcage to compare the sensation to different portions of their own hand.

👊🏽 Underweight, Unhealthy: BCS 1-3/9
Lightly glide your fingers over your knuckles as you make a fist. A dog’s or cat’s body condition is underweight if their entire ribcage feels similar to this.

🤚🏽 Ideal Weight, Healthy: BCS 5/9
Open your hand and face your palm down. Lightly glide your fingers over your knuckles. A dog’s body condition is ideal if their entire ribcage feels similar to this.

🖐🏽Overweight, Unhealthy: BCS 7/9
Open your hand and face your palm upwards. Lightly glide your fingers over the base of your fingers. A dog’s body condition is overweight if their entire ribcage feels similar to this.

✋🏽Obese, Unhealthy: BCS 9/9
Open your hand and face your palm upwards. Lightly glide your fingers over the base of your thumb. A dog’s body condition is obese if their entire ribcage feels similar to this.

❌ “Fatty” dogs are NOT cute, so 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒑 𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒕. Do your friends and family a favour and help them realise if their dog is overweight.

🤭 𝗜 𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗗 𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗪𝗘𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗗𝗢𝗚𝗦...

and I had no idea.

➡️ The top photo is about 5 years ago, Pepsi my Labrador was 3 and Yogi my Border Collie was 4. The photo below are what both my dogs looks like now.

🤷🏽‍♀️ You are probably asking yourself, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?! Because when I found these photos on my old iPhone, I did too!

👉🏽 How did I have two very overweight/ obese dogs and why not my vet, not my family, not my groomer, not my friends ever tell me that this was the case?

🤐 The reason why nobody told me, was because NOBODY KNEW. Or they knew and couldn’t confront me because they were worried they would hurt my feelings.

🌎 The truth is, being “fat” is normalised in this current day and age, in both humans and pets. It is more likely that I’d attract attention now from my two fit and healthy dogs because to some they appear “underweight”.

❌ We NEED to stop normalising obesity like it is a sign of being “over loved”.

❌ We NEED to start communicating with each other and being honest when we see an animal suffering due to weight issues.

🗯 We NEED to speak up and start advocating for animals that don’t have that choice.

🚫 We NEED to STOP accepting overweight animals as “normal”.

📈 𝙈𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙’𝙨 𝙥𝙤𝙥𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙬𝙚𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩.

✅ Let’s start being proactive about it and making a change and NORMALISE FIT, HEALTHY, ACTIVE humans and pets!

Let’s set the scene. This may become a bit sensitive for some, and I apologise in advance.

You’re out somewhere. You might be at a restaurant, a bar, a public park on a sunny day enjoying the sunshine with your family. It may be that you’re on your way home from work or trying to catch the bus. You’re just minding your own business.

Suddenly, a person comes straight up to you. They give you anxiety. What is this person going to do? I don’t know! The person is walking with a friend and the friend sees you’re a bit anxious and calls out to you saying “Don’t stress, she/he’s all good!’’ But they keep approaching you. And when they finally reach you they randomly hug you. Touch you. Walk circles around you. Start talking to you. Don’t let you leave.

What would you call that? Harassment? Assault in severe cases?
How would this make you feel?

Now, after the initial shock you find your courage and you ask the person to go away. Leave you alone. But the person doesn’t stop and instead touches your arm or your hair. “Oh come on, we’re alright. I’m not doing anything bad I’m friendly! Just let me be around you.’’You get upset and might push the person. Shout at them. If you’re a bit more of an assertive person you might punch them. Who knows.
Then the person and the friend get upset. Well? WHY are you here then? What are you doing in this public space if you don’t like being around other people? You have no business to be here, minding your own business in this park with your family without allowing me to sit with you, play with you, touch you, talk to you. Actually, you know what you should do? You should be more social! You should go more often to random groups of people.

If you thought any of the above situation is not okay (and I sure as heck hope you do), then why do we think it’s okay to let dogs run up to strange dogs and say ‘It’s okay he’s friendly’?

What we do in the dog world is the exact opposite what we should be doing. We label the harassed dog as aggressive and the harassing dog as the victim.

Dogs have emotions. They have feelings. They have their own characters and personalities. There are many, many dogs that are not interested in making new friends or being with dogs they don’t know they can trust.

And sure, some dogs love playing with other dogs. Those are the extraverted dogs. Just like we have people that LOVE hugging or love making new friends even as adults, but to be honest.. how many of those people do you know? I think if you put it into a % its lower than the people that rather just are with their select group of people and be left alone by random strangers in public spaces.

So don’t assume the dog your dog is running towards on the beach, is willing to play with your dog. Being in a public space means you need to have your dog under effective control. And if you can’t call your dog back, it should be on a long line until you can.

Yes that’s correct! Most of the time we are helping you change your habits, your way of thinking, your handling skills and clearing up communication.

Slowing your movements down to slow your dog down, removing lead tension and tension in your body to release tension in your dog.

We are helping you understand your dog and what they need to thrive! And most of the time we need to cut out our habits and way of thinking. We need to start thinking for the dog, how they understand and learn.

SOCIALISATION
Socialisation is a funny thing, the word itself has become a bit of a buzz word and many people think it’s something it’s not
The critical socialisation period is the first 14-16 weeks of your dogs life. This is the time where things that you want your dog to think of as normal need to be introduced
I like to think of ‘socialisation’ more as EXPOSURE. This creates the idea that your dog just needs to be exposed to things rather than interact with it
Edan is now eight months old and her exposure to new places, people, sounds and activities continues
Last weekend we took her on *I think* about her fifth road trip. We camped out with other campers and their dogs. Where we stayed was next to a horse and cycle trail so she saw a lot of these (and shout out to the riders who were so kind with letting us hang out with them for a bit until edan was calm), we managed to get ourselves two flat tyres so while they were being changed we were able to hang out in the yard with some wild cats as well as all their tools and machinery, we saw kids at the skate park and practiced sitting calmly and practiced impulse control by not rushing out the door even when its open (this is so important on our trips!)
This girl really aced it and I’m really proud but our journey is far from over when it comes to socialisation. I still aim to get her off the property for a purposeful exposure trip a couple times a week 👏🏻 . . . . . . . .

PLAY 🤩
When was the last time you played with your dog? Like really went out and just enjoyed being in the moment with them?
For me this is an absolute must for every dog and in our house tug is a go to 🙌🏻
Tug works your dogs body and brain at the same time, it also builds bond, engagement, focus, bite inhibition and if done right can be so rewarding for you and your dog! It can also give you a huge advantage if you struggle to recall your dog
If you have a herding or bitey breed then tug is a must for you 🙏🏻
Here is a video sped up from yesterday of edan and I just down at the beach, there was a lot going on around us but she loves to play!
Any dog can learn how to play with their owners but it looks different for everyone and each dog has a different play style, do you know how your dog likes to play and interact? . . . . . . . .
