MUD!!! What's it doing to your horse......?

The answer is two-fold:
🌧 In slippery conditions your horse is more prone to injury. This is not just from the obvious slips and falls but also from just walking around. When it is slippery your horse will shorten its stride and tense up to stay balanced. What do you get? Strain to muscles, tendons and ligaments resulting in a sore horse. 🙁

🌧 Moisture is the perfect environment for bacteria and also softens the feet allowing the bacteria to get in. What do you get? Issues such as thrush, mud fever, abscesses and seedy toe. As we all know once a horse has sore feet it ends up with a sore body as well.

Why am I telling you this? Because I can help! Bowen Therapy is just as important in the winter months as it is the rest of the year to ensure that when the sunny days arrive your horse is ready to go!

At what age do we start getting excited about a new manure fork? Asking for a friend….

And before anyone comes at me on the colour, it was chosen by a six year old. Apparently that is the age when choosing the colour of said manure fork is exciting.

On Saturday I had the opportunity to attend a seminar hosted by Dr Sarah Daly and the NZ Equine Research Foundation in relation to Equine Podiatry.

It was a great opportunity to see a bunch of hoof X-rays and discuss how issues in the feet, either due to conformation, trimming or shoeing effect the horses posture and comfort.

Fortunately he’s retired 😳. If I had to scrape that off I would still be at it at Christmas.

Just a tip heading in to the weekend:

Horse salt does not have to be fancy Himalayan salt, regular salt does the same job.

Pink Himalayan salt hanging on a block has a few disadvantages:
🐴 often it’s left outdoors and the rain slowly washes it away until it snaps off the rope and lands on the ground
🐴 horses licking the block make it drip and corrode whatever it drips on
🐴 for a horse to get its daily intake of salt off a salt block it would have to stand there licking for so long it would get a sore tongue or give up.

So what can you do instead?

You can buy bags of salt from most stock feed stores such as HR Fiskens very cheap. From memory 20kg of loose salt is approximately $25-$30 and that’s going to last a VERY long time.

I have this over rail feed bin in my horse shelter that I fill up 3-4 times per year. Any horse (normally my young horse) that wants a little extra salt in addition to what I already give them in their daily feed just grabs a mouthful when needed.

In the winter the salt gets a little damp but as soon as the sun comes out it dries back out again, it doesn’t deteriorate by being left out.

Has this sudden change in the weather left your unicorn feeling less than stellar?

Following a long period of dry weather I am seeing plenty of horses that are feeling the effects of the sudden growth in the grass, which has resulted in horses feeling general tightness and stiffness in their body or discomfort in their stomachs.

The tightness in their bodies can be caused by sensitivity in the feet, either from the grass growth that has made them 'footy' or from their hard dry hooves suddenly becoming softer. These changes result in compensation tightness throughout their body as horses shuffle their weight around seeking comfort.

They can also be suffering from tightness in the hind end due to toxins building up in the body from the sudden increase in grass sugars effecting their muscles.

And finally, there are the horses who are slightly irritable or showing mild stomach discomfort or mild colic symptoms from the sudden change in their forage.

If this sounds like your horse and you would like to help them through this period please feel free to message me. Bowen Therapy is fantastic for removing toxins from the body and relaxing tense muscles

Mondays are hard.

This morning this guy came in the house first thing, walked straight past breakfast, yelled at me in a slightly hysterical tone as he jumped on the bed and immediately turned in to a hedgehog.

I get it buddy, Mondays are hard but cmon it’s not that dramatic. Is it?
