Welcome to the farm, girls! Our new house cow, Magnum, and her foster calves Milly and Molly came home today. Another week and they'd all have been dead. When we got home and let down the float ramp, Milly was discovered checking out her new mum's milk. Molly is a bit more shy we think. Magnum (she dodged a bullet) is tucking into grass. The calves, faced with outside, did the zoomies. I think everyone is happy, even the farmer we got them from.

One left! A wee black and white boy.10 weeks old today.

When life gives you lemons. We have put the first real volume of fertiliser on for far too many years. However the truck couldn't get up one track to get to 3 paddocks in desperate need. So we dragged out the quad spreader. Fail. Spent a day modifying the holes at the bottom to widen the gap to spread chook manure. Tested and it worked! Next day, Andrew's birthday, he put 3 loads on. But the bearings failed on the spinner partway through the first load. So now we're using the spreader as a hopper and doing it by hand. 4.5 tonnes to go....

Session 2. Yesterday was a washout. 33.5ml of rain plus howling wind gusts. So this morning, hands on 3 babies, carrot stick on the black filly. Seven/Pate's foal handicapped because his mum isn't halter broken either. So she got to be touched on her top line as well. The last 4 year old to be handled! Very happy to find an itchy patch around his poll and ears. Feisty wee dude.

Back to work with the young ones. Sapphy and Skye get a reminder that they lead, then we have 4 foals to wean and halter break. Stars today were Zeus, who had a halter on for the first time. He's been in as a new baby when his mum Zanida had a nasty reaction to something in spring. Next, Thor, half Peruvian, no handling, sniffed fingers and allowed me to scratch him from the bum to the withers. Not bad for day one!
