🐔 CHICKEN RESCUE UPDATE 🐔

TLDR:
The May 2nd rescue is full! ❤️
We have another, impromptu rescue on May 24th, with an extra 400 hens to find homes for 😬🙀
We still have 400 hens needing homes on June 27th.

Read on for the answers to all your burning questions!!!

I am BEYOND grateful to all of you for sharing our last post so beautifully! 400 hens now have homes to go to on May 2nd, and those adopters should start receiving logistics information in the next couple of weeks!

In the meantime, I've had a cry for help from another retiring couple who want to rehome their last flock of laying hens! We'll be slotting this rescue in on May 24th, and will have pick up points in Whangarei, Matakana, Albany, Waiheke (!!!) and Pukekawa! This will be the only Waikato opportunity until July/August so do get in quick if you'd like hens before then!

And then our scheduled Rodney/Northland rescue will go ahead with ANOTHER group of 400 hens needing homes in Kerikeri/Whangarei/Matakana/Albany on June 27th!

I'll be processing application over the weekends so please don't panic if you don't hear back immediately! 🐔 CHICKEN RESCUE TIME AGAIN!!! 🐔

Here we go again team! The next 2 Northland rescues have confirmed dates - May 2nd and June 27th. We'll be working to find homes for both with them being so close together!

We'll have pickup points in Kerikeri, Whangarei, Matakana and Albany and will need homes for nearly 1000 hens altogether 🙀

What an epic day!!!!

Looking through the photos I managed to quickly grab at this morning's rescue, the thing that jumps out are the smiles! 🥰 What a perfect representation of the joy we all experience at this farm. The hens are happy and clearly feel safe, the farmers are so kind and grateful, the team are absolute saints powered by rocket fuel!!!! And we all hum along knowing that these hens are off to a retirement home full of love and kindness thanks to our incredible adopters!!

For me the biggest thing that sets this farm apart is that EVERY SINGLE HEN is rehomed 😍🥰 How incredible is that?! We've worked together for a number of years now, keeping thousands of hens from an awful inevitability in the egg industry, thanks to the incredible support of our Northland animal loving community, the flexibility of the farmers, and the tireless efforts of our volunteers. I am beyond grateful for every cog in this wonderful rescue machine and cannot wait to do it all again!

Speaking of... the next Northland rescue is only 2 months away so KEEP THOSE APPLICATIONS COMING! 🙏

🐔 LAST CALL FOR CHICKENS!!! 🐔

Our first rescue of the year is nearly here 🎉 This Sunday, Feb 15th, we have just over 400 hens to save from our Northland farm 🥰

We still need homes for about 50 hens, but only have pickups available in Matakana or Whangarei for these due to transport restrictions.

If you can adopt, please email [email protected] with photos of your coop, your preferred pickup point, best contact number and the number of hens you'd like to adopt 🙏🥰

If you can't adopt but want to help, please share this post in all those lovely Northland community groups! You guys are just the best at rallying around a good cause, and I know we can get all of these girls beautiful homes!!!

🐓 COMMUNITY REHOME 🐓

Edit: The boys have a home!!!! Thank you all so much!

There is no way I could put this better than the lovely Abbey, so I'm just going to leave you with her plea.

"We are writing to you with desperation. We were dumped 3 abused baby chickens neglected by their owner. We were told they were female jungle foul by the man who dumped them with us. Who then said he was going to otherwise "throw them away". As we are in Auckland we cannot own roosters. As we nurtured them and they grew, we realised all 3 were roosters and we are hoping they weren't going to be used for fighting but the signs were there. It seemed he wanted to get rid of the evidence of his illegal c**k fighting. They have grown into the most beautiful pet roosters that we have ever seen. They are so friendly and polite. We ballpark they are around 2.5-3 months old. They are polite with our hens even though they outnumber them. They have even been socialized with our dog. We are looking for a forever home for these 3 brothers. We have built such trust with them over the last couple months we do not want to violate that by culling them. But they have just started crowing loudly and properly and the council has given us until Wednesday to get rid of them due to neighbor complaints. They are so polite and just need some land to live out the rest of their days."

🐔 TRANSPORT NEEDED URGENTLY 🐔

Only 3 days to go!!! We have a mammoth 1000 hens to transport around the country on Friday night and have *almost* all our drivers organized. The last 2 pieces of the puzzle involve our West Auckland and Matakana runs.

For West Auckland, we have an amazing driver lined up with a tow ball! We just need a float or similar to tow the crated hens in 🙏 if you have something that could be used, and are happy to lend it out for a good cause, please get in touch ASAP!

Our Matakana run is a little trickier. We currently have no one lined up and need to get 80 hens from Maramarua to Matakana at 7:30pm, so it's a bit of an adventure! Again, this could be 1 person with a float, or I'm sure we could make it work with 3 cars or 2 station wagons with the right combinations of crates 😅

🐔 LAST CHANCE FOR THE CHICKENS 🐔

Ok, our first run for this rescue is just 5 days away!!! If you want to adopt, today is your last day to apply!

🐔 The number of hens you'd like to adopt
🐔 Your best contact number
🐔 Your preferred pickup area

Our other dilemma is transport 😬 For Thursday night, we only need 1 (MAYBE 2) car loads to Albany - please let me know urgently if you can do this 🙏

For the 31st, we need to get:
🐔 80 hens (around 3 carloads, or 1 float) to Matakana
🐔 125 hens (4-5 cars or 1 float) to Albany
🐔 100 hens (3-4 cars or 1 float) to Helensville
🐔 50 hens (2 cars) to Bombay - this could potentially be 1 person making 2 trips since it's close

All you need is a car - banana boxes can be used to contain the hens for the drive, or dog/cat crates if you have them 😊 if you have a float I can supply some crates, just let me know what you need!

🐔 2000 HENS NEED HOMES NOW 🐔

WE'RE NEARLY HALF WAY!!!!!

This is where things get fiddly. Some pickup areas are now full, but we still need homes for just over 1000 hens 😬

To make life more interesting, we've also had a date change, so we'll be rescuing these girls on the 23rd, as well as the 31st as planned - effectively moving the whole rescue forward a week!!! 🙀

So where do we need homes?
Albany, Franklin, North Waikato, Cambridge, Thames and Taumuranui all still have space!

When?
Pickups will be happening on the evenings of the 23rd and 31st, with some places able to hold the hens overnight for collection on the morning of the 1st - you'll get exact details in the logistics email once approved.

With dates set in concrete, we now seriously need to get homes approved for our upcoming 2000 hen rescue!

Where?
We'll have pick up points from Matakana all the way down to Taumuranui / Rotorua, and everywhere in between!

When?
The rescue will happen on the 31st of October and 7th of November, with most people able to pick up on the Saturday morning.

🐔 COMMUNITY REHOME 🐔

Edit: She has a home!!!! Thank you so much everyone!!!

It's a tale as old as time...
This black beauty wandered onto poor Ian's property (much to the delight of his dogs!) and made herself at home! He's tried door knocking and posting on his local groups, but no one seems to know where Miss Chook has come from!
The SPCA won't return his calls, and now Ian's left with a small, feathery problem on his hands.
With his dogs, staying isn't an option, so we need to find her a safe new forever home, with humans who can pick her up from Papakura ASAP!
